There is no question that with some moderate seniority and a little know-how, you can work less, sometimes WAY less, on Reserve - especially as a local - and make similar money.

But for anyone new, that’s not always true. I’ve bid a TON of reserve in my time here, and have championed exactly what notEnuf’s argument is. But I would also say that, on average, when I bid a line I’ve worked a little more, but made a lot more. Reserve definitely is more difficult to add pay to your month, unless GS are flowing. Just depends on what your main driver is.

I like the “not my monkey, not my circus” moniker. Perfect. The company isn’t addressing the issue because a) it is subjective and b) they’ve always given FAs the benefit of the doubt because they are non-union and need to maintain that level of ReSpECt. $$$
there is no way it’s smooth up front and bumpy in the back. Now light chop up front could be choppy in the back. I’ve witnessed that riding the FA jumpseat in a 900. Heck even witnessed it using the rest room on a bathroom break. Lil tricky trying to walk into that tiny restroom vs sitting comfortably admiring the scenery and reading Vol II

Smooth as glass but “it’s really bumpy in the back.”

Inconceivable
I would have asked if we are on the same aircraft

I’ve had the exact opposite experience but 1.) I don’t bid a ton of reserve and 2.) I’ve only been here 10 years. I bid reserve in vacation months sometimes and it pays way more than a regular line with way less work. Maybe I have just gotten lucky.

Well, that’s certainly true. Vacation is its own conversation, and is usually the better deal, especially for pay/days worked.

Generally, I’ve found if you want to make 80 hours, you can probably do that in a normal month without too much difficulty. But if you want to make more, you’ll probably need to bid a line. Of course that assumes no GS, so take that into account if they are flowing to your Seniority, as that can change form month to month and season to season.

The math on this scenario is changing as the value of a vacation day has gone up over the years. It's not the slam-dunk-bid-reserve scenario that it used to be.

I've come to the same conclusion. It's even less of a slam dunk in categories where it's easy to break ADG. Unless reserves are just not getting used, it's probably down to your preference. Now if I can line up vacation and CQ in the same month, I think I'll be more apt to take advantage of reserve as I can minimize availability and also maybe drop a few days of reserve while still hitting the high 80s. Done right, you leave very little time the company can use you.

Except the pay you get on reserve also goes up, so the equation stays basically the same.
