So I get to my row on my dhd back from DTW today... thankfully I had a window seat. Kind of.

As I walk up to the row, I see Jabba the Hut has snagged the isle seat. Definitely a customer of size, and not only is the arm rest up in between him and the middle seat, but also the arm rest by the isle.

Anyhoo, I climb into my seat by the window, and about 10 minutes later I see another 270-300 pounder waddling down the isle. He gets the middle seat. 2 people taking up more than 2 seats sitting next to each other turns into a lot less space for 80 by the window.

This was me for the next 2 hours trying to find my happy place:

Too bad you aren't as good as an Alaska pilot and DALPA isn't willing to fight to improve your QOL. Instead they want you to work and be away from home more and feel the pain as you do so.

"Pilot must be provided first class on deadhead any time first class seats are available on any flight."

"Pilot must be provided first class on a deadhead on ANY flight over five hours. This also includes consecutive deadhead legs adding up to 5 hours (all those flights need to be first class)."

"Any food available for purchase by passengers in the main cabin must be offered to deadheading pilots free of charge."

"If onboard internet is available on any airplane it must be made available to deadheading pilots free of charge."

-Alaska Airlines Contract

All these and more should have been included in this TA given the "leverage" and where Delta is going profit wise. DALPA is happy to give away work rules for a few sweaty dollars instead.

A few more nuggets from the company that does our flying for us on the west coast:

Minimum daily guarantee = 5 hours

Short Call (2 hour notification) gets paid 79 hours

Long Call (11 hour notification) gets paid 75 hours

Long Call can be converted to Short Call 4 times per month. The first time the pilot is paid an additional 2 hours. The next 3 times the pilot is paid an additional hour for each conversion. Permission must be granted by the pilot for any conversions greater than 4.

Off Days of Reserve. A reserve pilot will receive at least two 2 day periods in a row, one row of 3 days, and one group of five days in a row off during the calendar month of reserve.

I was on a DH from ATL on a full MD90. A guy was unable to put his armrest down, and the lady next to him complained to the FA. The FA called the red coat, and the red coat REMOVED him from the flight!

We'll be sure to get that all if there is a merger. Hopefully you are on the NC if that happens. Also ask for both Sonic Cruiser rates and traffic watch C152 rates...

I'm sure it's all a bunch of laughs to you but "80" would have been more well rested had he been in first class catching some Z's. I doubt we would get these work rules in a merger with AK. Guys like you will sell our next opportunity out for a few more sweaty dollars.

Even if 80 had been on AK he would have been in the back, the caveat seats available in first would have doomed him to coach. Does AK only get 8 x days on reserve ? Just asking.

What do you mean by 8 x days on reserve?

80 would have still been better off with the AK contract. If first class is full they need to give you an emergency exit row.

I don't know where 80 was coming from but if he was DHing a leg or multi leg adding up to 5 hours it is a mandatory (not just is available) first class seat.

Alaska pilots also are provided crew meals on every flight (short or long).

Just remember, Delta pilots have an industry leading contract and getting better. Just ask DALPA.

One other note, AK pilots will never fly reserves up to 99 hours.....unless they merge with Delta and DALPA tells the company we don't need to retain all the good found in their contract.
