For most Delta pilots the news today about the CRJ order was painful to hear. Not unexpected, but either way you voted, not the way you wanted to start your day. I'm sure Delta got a hell of a deal on the jets and wrangled the elimination of additional 50 seaters, but the one thing nobody is talking about is that the far superior product lost out. The EMB jets have better seats, more overhead space....not even close. Watching people line the jetway to wait for their bags to be humped up is pathetic. Beancounters win again.

Slowly over time, not all in 2013. And at the rate we're going, unfortunately I'd expect at least some contractual relief will be granted if necessary. It takes a while to stop a freight train and then turn it in the other direction. We're still on the fast track to shrinkage and shoveling more coal onto the fire. 1000 or so down from the merger and we're still supposedly fat, and we're still shrinking. If the 717 was truly the catalyst for growth (or even partial merger level restoration) then hiring would be imminent. Instead we're told we're fat and no hiring for at least another year. Oh and here come the fantasy land foreign carriers with their zillion super widebodies on order counting on us to gift them capacity to preserve margins.
Then expected. In addition the fact we are running the best airline Delta has seen in 25 years has resulted in far fewer pilots needed. Over 100 new CA positions were created in the last 2 bids and between 100 and 150 new CA positions are expected on the next bid. |

We are in effect hiring. They are getting virtually every mil leave pilot back. These are the guys who went out 10 years ago. They all have their 20 years in now and are coming back in far greater percentages

We're going to hire in 2012, but they are mil leaves returns, yeah, that's it. |

I don't remember that from the TA Roadshows.

I still say in 12 years, it is very possible for me to be number 6000 out of 9000 with Delta never furloughing a single pilot. Yes that will be 17 years at Delta to get to 66 percent of the list. This is during the time of what is supposedly the most retirements in history. For those of you that are naive, we have no plans to hire a single pilot in 2013.

The beancounters win again is right. "In future models, there could be a window in the pod." "This is not a pod, it's a spacecraft and the astronaut needs a window" ^^^a case where the beancounters didn't win^^^ Not that I would in any way defend an RJ replacement, but since we are ditching Canadair 50's, I guess our "good deal" was based on getting Canadairs. |
