Am I the only one who is really upset by our UPPER Management because the lack of hiring. Listen as a very bottom guy I want hiring but I am more concerned with giving up our lead among all majors but a short sighted decision to not hire. We are a world class airline yet someone decides we cannot hire so we don't. I think the blame needs to fall squarley on RA EB and even SD. If we need to hire it is imperative for SD to say so and make it happen. That is why he is in the position he is in. If our BOD is saying no hiring that shows me how completly utterly useless, overpaid, out of touch, and moronic they are. We are very close to squandering the years of customer loyalty and good will we all have worked very hard to build. If we are running out of pilots the 3rd weekend of April on many fleets something is wrong.
I hope this summer goes ok because if it does not we may have ruined our brand long time after working so hard to get it right. Take care everyone Come next fall, if/when they reduce flying for the Winter Schedule, they'll go back to having reservs that only fly 20-30 hours a month. |

I agree but I have no fears that any flights will be cancelled this summer, even without hiring. They can use reserves more and there will be many, many, many greenslips given out if they get short. They have done the math, that costs them less than hiring.

I agree with you - you take those points you made, add in a modification to the TLV for the M88 or other shorted fleets like they did a few years ago. Poof: Summer '13 flying covered.
So I raised my hand and asked, "If you staff the airline so that every reserve is already flying 70 hours, every month, just to cover the regular schedule, what are you going to do when the weather gets bad and now you NEED reserves?" He said, "That's what Green Slips and assignements are for." So, there you go. I don't see them hiring until every reserve is flying the monthly max and they have trouble finding enough guys willing to answer the phone on their off days. |
Hey guys, I've got to be in Prague next week for two days. I've never been there and the schedule will be busy, but where's the best place to eat and/or drink beer?

File an extension. Turbotax takes about 2 seconds and you print and mail it. Gives you until Oct 15th.

So I'm on the outside wanting to get in. I, like many others, want to get hired when the hiring resumes. I do understand that the Summer schedule is when the staffing is at it's thinnest. If there are instances now where they are running out of pilots to cover trips what do they do when the flying picks up in the summer?? Try doing more GS? Pull IP's out of the school house, management guys out of the office, cancel trips? I can't understand not wanting to add pilots unless there is a bigger picture they are not saying (more shrinking). I'm not the brightest, but when you bring on a new hire they are essentially the cheapest (hourly) rate that you can cover flying with, right? I would think that would bring the overall hourly cost (average per pilot) down. Am I wrong? Correct me if so. I would think the cost of cancelling flights would far out weigh the cost of bringing on more warm bodies to the front of DAL aircraft.
thanks in advance for shedding the light on this for me Even with the generous peak leveling relief we gave them in the recent contract, I'm just not seeing how things will be covered in many categories, even with lots of green slips. Even before guys go to 717 training (and other categories to be converted in May through August) some of the categories that are being used to "fund" the "electric-9" are bottoming out in March and April. Also keep in mind that, despite the talk, DL is still a shrinking airline. Even if the 717 changes that WRT DL seniority list block hours, the network shows no signs of leveling off or growing. The shrinkage is minor, but its shrinkage nonetheless. And the 717/growth 737's won't be here til long after summer, and we still have a ton of 320's/757's/DC-9's to start parking as soon as they start getting here. Flt Ops wanted to hire, but the bean counters said no. Its too late now regardless for the peak summer schedule. To borrow a phrase, we will go to war with the army we have. If the Euro and/or Dollar don't implode before 2014, we will then start the process of ramping up hiring. Hope to see you here though! |
