I'd be for that if we then increased the bucket sizes accordingly(you hate me, sorry:D)... but I'd like to see actual "credit" for SC and not just "RAW". That would probably take Sect. 6 to fix, but who knows!
As for more elections... The reps would be further marginalized by removing their BOD vote for Nat'l. officers and their MEC vote for Chairman et al. That would play right into the Carl argument that "reps have no power". Only 28% of pilots voted in the last ATL LEC election, I'm not sure it would make a difference in participation but maybe! We know pretty much everyone on this board participates (except for the DPA hard-cores who claim ALPA is broken and want no part in participating or fixing it), its the other 72% that don't care. Curious- how would a membership election of the MEC chairs marginalize the reps? Currently that process is removed from the membership, and national leadership doubly removed from the membership. edit: per sink's request I posed the concept in the representation thread. |

I asked this question to the higher ups at the recent base meeting. They said that they will likely offer them DTW 73. They want to minimize having them bid directly off the plane.
We shall see.... |

I think the bucket sizes should be variable. They have been unwilling to shift the bucket sizes thus far. Most important is tying SC to the overall bucket. Currently (and quite frequently), you can fly every day on call and then be first up for short call despite being in a higher bucket than others. That has to be fixed.
Curious- how would a membership election of the MEC chairs marginalize the reps? Currently that process is removed from the membership, and national leadership doubly removed from the membership. Combining SC and current RAW in to one metric will require negotiations, so its a good resolution to bring to the floor of the LEC. On the elections. There are two sides to this and both make good and valid points. If the membership wants to go this way, I have always suggested a middle ground position. Membership elects, the Master Chairman, but the MEC (Reps) hold the ability to recall. Furthermore, the MEC could nominate the candidaes to the top three vote getters (MEC-Rep vote) and then send these top vote/nomination candidates to the pilots for vote. What this does is take the concern that a direct membership election and recall process would turn in to some of the independent food fight where the process stalls and work cannot get done. It allows the ability to recall to remain with the Reps who have the most intimate knowledge of the effectiveness of a person. A nomination vote from the MEC puts a check valve in the process that allows those that truly have the ability to run our MEC (not a easy task btw, with 600 volunteers and 29 Reps with a reach that most do not appreciate) to be vetted. Unless these items are part of the Resolution that passes the LEC level, it will be face with stiff headwind. The whole debate goes to the philosophical level of a Representational democracy, which the USA is but with some one offs like the ability to impeach not being left to the populous but their elected representatives, and, the nominations being being vetted though a primary process of two parties. That gets taken care of by recall remaining with the MEC and a nomination process mimicking the two party primary process we see in US politics with a MEC nomination process that is open to pilot in good standing. What say you? |
