Actually, that's nothing compared to the old 727 Captains that were so terrified of glass that when they couldn't follow the last 727 around anymore they retired rather than go to school for the 73N, 757, 767 or 777. Some of them had very low seniority numbers and swore by steam powered gauges and hand flying (plus the hand holding by a F/O and Engineer - kept them out of trouble).

We were having beers one night when they were both actively flying, just after I had checked out in the right seat of the 757/767 (1989). They both said, "That's not flying, that's pushing buttons!" And I said, yep, but when there's fog in BOS and I want to get home, it's got that nice "Auto Land" button, and I'm going home, on time, rather than diverting to Manchester!
They continued to deride the 757...so I finally said, "Look all three of us have flown the DC 9 and the 727, right? And we all agree they are great airplanes, right? But only ONE of us has flown the 757, and HE LOVES IT!"

Just when I thought Boeing couldn't do any better than the 757, I got on the 777! It's like a 757 on 'roids, and it does nearly everything for you, even lets you get a good nap on a long flight!
All my friends who fly the mid-east carriers love the service and say it is way better than all US carriers. Unfortunately, your friend has their carriers all mixed up. Etihad has a hub in Abu Dhabi, Qatar airlines has a hub in Doha (and no A-380's...a few on order, although there is a sweet C-17 in their livery) and the carrier with the double decker and the Dubai hub is Emirates. Your point is taken and I agree with someone who said their service is what is going to be the nail in our coffin...or our lack of it if you prefer.

On my timecard it says:
NBR PAYBACK DAYS AUTHIORIZED FOR USE: 1
Not sure how or when I earned that but now that I have it, what can I do with it?
I have a line this month but am on reserve next month. Can I use it to replace one of my on call days? Any usage restrictions?
Thanks Scoop

Flew with a Capt at my 1rst airline that started all approaches on the 72 at plus 15!!! Gusts added on top! That was because during the switch from props to jets, guys were expecting instant power the same as the props...some apparently landed short. Always made for an exciting ride into the old SRQ airport!

The ME carriers well be very desperate for pilots at some point. I foresee US bases.I think if they they add the housing allowance to the salary they pay US-based pilots, then it will cause DAL, AA, UAL + TO have some pilot retention problems, and even more initial hiring problems than the will have without the ME US-based pilots.

I'm beginning to think you're correct. Friend didn't know what they were talking about. A quick check revealed Qatar does have a 50 billion order including 13 A380's and 80 A350's but none have been delivered yet. My friend told me Qatar was making a big deal about their newest airplane. An "Ayy three eighty or something like that". Who knows what it really was. My friend is not an aviation buff. None the less they said this flight experience blew US carriers away. Take if for what it's worth.
