Sounds like some small company with no IT department rather than a S&P 500 with a "business relationship" with Microsoft.
IE9 has been available for 3 years, it's not like it just showed up. Now if you're talking about EasyBid and their issues, then that's their problem. That's not what I'm frustrated with - it's DL and their antiquated IT. I mean, everytime I'm trying to change my DH seat on a DL computer I have to click through Script errors or something because the computer use such an old version of IE that Delta.bomb doesn't work well with it. Navtech a vendor too lets not forget that. We can go in to the capital acquisition costs of upgrades or new computers etc, but lets not. I, like you have no visibility in to the IT and how they procure or renew software nor hardware. IE8 was the browser that was no longer supported that caused issues. IE8 was on a lot of computers and was what Easy Bid used. It caused more issues. Poor planning apparently and maybe on Microsoft's part. Who knows. I did not know that IE8 was no longer going to get support. I generally get popups on those sort of things and never saw one. Doesn't mean it wasn't there, just means that Microsoft who supports a lot of businesses did not make this real visible. If everyone knew, then lets hope the updates are not to IE9  |

The very fact that we even have to pay for an outside vendor to audit and submit our bids, is ridiculous. There should be so much more functionality in what we can do and how we can do it. I'm talking phone apps. I pay for iCrew Max so that I can have a semi functional phone app that I can track my schedule and look at open time without having to resort to blindness and carpal tunnel inducing phone computing. This tablet we're getting... I know I keep slamming it, it's really not the hardware. It's the fact that I believe (based on years of frustrating experience) that this will be just the latest in a long, long line of tech missteps and disappointments. PeoplePC, Ecrew, having to enter passwords time after time, VPN tunnels, crew notification glitches, give me a break! It's not state secrets here, people! All the q & a on the tablet, it's all "not at this time", or, "planned for the roadmap". A company this size, this far-flung, deserves a world class IT department with a budget to get things done.

I like your thinking but in the next downturn, the company will take that all back and the reduction of manpower will be all that much more.

Read the notes from the last MEC Meeting and the Scheduling Committee's report. They are looking at new PBS software and software that will be tablet/app capable. Apparently its a ways off but the process has started.
Has anyone seen the APP that the AMR guys have? I was in a MIL class all week with a bunch of AMR Pilots and a few UAL dudes. After comparing notes we are way behind. An AMR Pilot APP, forgot what it is called, detects via GPS/Cell when they are located at their sign-in airport and allows them to sign in on their phone by punching in a 4 digit code. No calls to a multi-step VRU line and waiting on hold for a scheduler - very nice and I hear we may get something similar with our tablet. But it does not stop there, it basically does everything ICREW max does and also displays the gate assignment of their next trip, downloads the flight plan to their phone, if they decide to print it will automatically locate the nearest printer and print it there. Also has a bunch of other cool stuff that I don't specifically remember. When he asked what we have I just said probably something similar to what they had in about 1995. Scoop :) |

Our regional partner Expressjet has something similar. When you sign-in you're one click away from gate info, crew info (including pictures ) and aircraft status (I believe.) It's a nice step up from our 1980's DOS-based, one-step-removed-from-a-green-screen-with-a-flashing-cursor, "SYNTAX ERROR," data entry method.
