One of you guys mind giving us a layman version of the various terms you're using and when/why I might need to look into this.

I assume it has something to do with avoiding massive death taxes? Why would a will not be sufficient, and what does a trust do for me that a will doesn't? Anything pilot specific that we should know that doesn't apply to Joe Everyman?

Death taxes depend upon the state. When my parents passed, there were no taxes. The estate was worth less than 3 million. It passed right on to their children without estate taxes. Depends upon the state.

I didn't do a trust because I don't have kids. Everything will pass to my wife without any taxes due to the marital exclusion. Sometimes, I think she is counting the days:D Trust's are for children, special needs adults and persons with high net worth, more than 3,000,000.

It's all important, but Georgia has made it easier in the last few years. Everything goes into one document, instead of three. It's different depending upon the state.

In retrospect, the death part was the easiest to administrate. The hard part was the incapacitated parent. Having all the right documents helped a lot. Do your kids a favor and get this stuff done.

Interesting, I didn't know that. Thanks.

JungleBus I didn't realize you were the Flying author. I read an article the other day and figured out we were in Grand Forks at the same time; although I was there for the AF I did live on University. Small world. And Welcome to Delta.

Thanks PF! I have some great Grand Forks memories in retrospect, but man I could not wait to get out at the time!

Hey Junglebus, aren't you in Maddog training? Get to bed! The faster you fall asleep, the faster the nightmares and hot sweats can start.

I actually enjoyed the Maddog and the pilots that say it sucks, either didn't get used to it or have never flown it. It's a good aircraft, the FO seat is a busy seat though. Good luck, welcome aboard.

I don't know how much time you did at a regional, but you have a golden career from here on out (I sincerely hope so, anyway). You guys and girls are getting in at the beginning of what is hopefully a big hiring wave and the movement is just beginning.

Welcome aboard, E

Thanks E! Everyone has been fantastic so far. Coming from the regional world, it's a breath of fresh air to be treated like an adult. I've been avoiding phrases like "golden ticket" because, well, there were a lot of '99 UA hires who thought they had the golden ticket! But barring anything too crazy happening, it does seem to be a great time to be getting on, & I'm tickled pink about it.

I'm still in the 100-level modules, getting those monster flows nailed down. You know, what I've seen of the airplane so far I really like. Lots of neat features. Yeah it's busy and pretty much the diametrical opposite of the Embraer, but that's half the attraction! Workload reminds me of back when I was single-pilot freight-dogging in ratty old Navajos & Senecas. Character building, I believe they call it.... :D

Definitely something fishy.. I highly recommend 1-800-USA-ALPA (option 5) at 0800 tomorrow morning.
