I'll admit one thing here. The most likely risk any of us have is having your entire family end up in a car accident in which everyone is injured. In that scenario, you would hit the family out of pocket max. Statistically that is still most likely not going to happen to any of us during our lifetime. So I choose to take the savings in premiums between the DPMP (best plan if you all get in a wreck) and the silver HSA and invest those in my HSA. Sure, I'm exposing myself to more risk. If the very unlikely event occurs that I hit the family out of pocket max, I can come up with max out of pocket and not go bankrupt. That's what a 9 month emergency fund is for.

The individual/family comparison applies to the DPMP as well. 350 annual deductible vs. 2600 or 5200 in/out network Silver. 2000 Out of Pocket Max for an individual on DPMP. If you don't think it's easy to hit that, then I applaud your incredible luck! Not being facetious! But even the individual deductible on the Silver plan would bring up the total cost to very close to what the DPMP would cost for a year. All things considered, I'd rather have the extra protection, lack of any paperwork or savings considerations, and no biometric data requirements. That's just me though, I definitely can see your take on it from a different point of view. I just don't think it's the slam dunk you are saying it is.

This is becoming the biggest pain in the ssa of all the other plans. If they continue to add more data requirements every year, I may switch just so I don't have to do all that crap. If you ever have your bp or cholesterol levels not fall into the accepted range, it will become a total goat rodeo.

For me, the Silver HSA is a slam dunk...for others it very well may not be. We must really be very lucky because with 6 of us we have never even come close to even an individual deductible other than when my wife hit it for having kids. And she hauls the kids into the doctor quite a bit so it must just be major catastrophes that people have I guess.

I only go to the doctor for my FAA medical or if someone has called 911 because I'm unconscious.......well until this year since I have to go to get the dang HSA dollars.

My personal feeling is that we will see the same thing happen with medical plans that we did with the pensions.

1. It's "contractual". So was the pension. It can become non-contractual especially since ALPA is the one who is keeping it contractual.

2. Those of you who think its not necessary to save into an HSA fall into the same group of dead zoners who thought it was not necessary to save into IRA's outside the pension. When the plan goes away you are left with nothing.

I'm going to max out my HSA every year. I can more easily do that by choosing a lower premium plan ($4,200 a year vs the DPMP) In 30 years I'll have close to a million bucks to fund my healthcare during retirement. Someone who goes the DPMP route will spend the same amount of money as I will, but won't have anything in an HSA. You remove a lot more healthcare cost risk over your lifetime by doing this than paying for a low deductible plan early on in life.

The crazy thing about this is that we have options because everyone has a different situation. Some on here should go with the DPMP for sure, no questions asked. HRA's will be gone so the Gold HRA is a plan to get out of. Gold HSA is probably the best for DPMP fans because it has low deductible AND lets you save into an HSA. Silver is probably the best plan for most people. Bronze would be ideal for anyone who is single or has no children. I just think the DPMP is a little pricey, but I will admit it is the least risky (which is why it costs more).

I haven't been paying too much attention to all the insurance posts, as I have Tricare as mil retiree. However, all your posts on HSA are getting me worried, and you sound like you know your stuff. Any idea on what my options for these kind of Health tax-free accounts are if I'm mil retiree on Tricare Prime?
Thanks!

Current junior capts are:
m88A NYC, 20 Mar 2000 North hire
727 nyv, 13Mar 2000 North hire.
Both are surrounded by 4Jun2001 south guys. So I'd say that's the current junior capt hire date, if you're looking for most recent.

outside nyc, junior capt is dtw 717a, north again, but equivalent south hire date of 22May2000.

Basically we're within 2 classes of all the furloughed guys from 2001 now, for the absolute junior reserve A. WOW that guy asked for the pain.

What biometric tests??? The ones which you get $$$ put into your HRA/HSA???

As far as I can see, those test are voluntary. Don't have to do them.

For the last three years, my family has hit the the max by around May/June. I still haven't won the Mega Millions or Powerball yet.

I have DPMP. While the premiums are higher, maxing out early and getting essentially free medical for the rest of the year balances out. The downside is having a kid who has some severe longterm health issues that lead to the maxing out. The Mayo clinic ain't cheap. but they do good work!

I am tricare as well and the internet research I did in indoc stated that tricare is not considered a high deductible program and therefore the IRS does not allow us to do an HSA. I originally wanted to use an HSA to pay my annual premium and potential copay.

There is a delta option for a tricare supplement but based on my situation it didn't make much financial sense for my family and current access to healthcare.

Dear brothers and sisters of the clouds....if you're flying over I-20 between Texas and Georgia, today, look down and take pity on the Dog Whisperer...for I am setting forth with my clan in the covered wagon to my in-laws. 13 + hours of forced imprisonment for my three stir crazy mini dogs ought to be interesting...just wish I had a sterile light. If you see a small mushroom cloud somewhere around Monroe....know from which it came....Happy Thanksgiving fellow Delta Dudes and Dudettes!!!

I like the layover, too. But the airport had been closed due to gunfire.

Kinda like Syria.
