As Slow so eloquently stated that are intended and unintended consequences to this deal. I think there is some drama to it, but a lot of it is true. We have a ton of feed to SA from NRT, from multiple ports to NRT, and if Haneda becomes the preferred access point to Tokyo and we are shut out (unlikely) a lot of our feed will be right sized.
He has the actual metrics which are covered under a strict NDA, but yes there are benefits to this deal. What we get from it is where I am voicing my opinion. We need the access, but for our cooperation, we should work for some mid-term improvements too. I have suggested a percentage of the revenue as it will be huge and it would be between us and the company and not involve JAL, the Japanese or US governments. It would involve a sign off from the creditors of the billion dollars though, and the deal is DOA without our support. We need to be reasonable, but it is reasonable to expect something positive. Just my thoughts and I am sure some will point out how naive they are! |

TOKYO — Delta Air Lines and its alliance partners offered $1 billion in aid to Japan Airlines on Wednesday, a proposal that American Airlines quickly said it would top as the world’s biggest airlines escalated a war for influence over the ailing Japanese carrier.
Maybe would get this guy to negotiate for DAL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKKHSAE1gIs Scoop :) |

We need to be reasonable, but it is reasonable to expect something positive. We do bring value to the table, and if everything goes our way I expect we may be abe to extract some of that value. We are starting from behind in this deal, so we don't have the leverage that you may think we have. The US Government is protecting its own interests in Japan first. Our company may suffer for that. The Japanese are protecting their investment. Our company is currently a competitor to that investment. The Japanese are culturally a very loyal society. They have an existing deal with AMR, and that carries weight. AMR can accurately claim they've paid every dollar that they've ever owed a creditor. Delta and NWA can't, and that's a cultural disadvantage. APA is on record against ATI. Delta ALPA is on record as supporting SkyTeam and has a JV record to prove it. SkyTeam's bid is currently a far superior economic package, even without the up front investment and cash infusions. The downside risks for Delta pilots in the combined Japan case are far greater than the upside potential. The Haneda access and "open skies" pieces are far more threatening than the JAL piece alone. In my view the same is true for AMR and APA pilots, but in a different priority. They can't afford to lose JAL, as One World would be relegated to a second tier alliance, but a Japanese version of "open skies" wouldn't hurt them nearly as badly as they're a bit player in Tokyo. UAL is in a pretty good place with ANA sown up no matter which way this goes. |
Slow, keep writing. We're reading. Even if your avatar is lame, we're reading.
I gave you a good option for one by the way a few pages back, I think the guys would enjoy it. --- Finally saw the WWII in HD on the History Channel today, it is very good just like everyone said. I was a WWII buff for many years so the ER to me was awesome to finally start seeing Paris, London and the European country side myself. You know what else was awesome on there, when they showed the color film of DC-9s coming down the production line. That is awesome that they were able to find some color film back then! :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItYtYNJmzDU Knew, I'm SORRY, I couldn't resist. Really sorry. you can throw your shoe at me later! And for the record, if the 9 comes to ATL I'll gladly fly it so I say what I say in love. And I mean that, it took a year or so but I've come around to love everything about that jets existence. :D |

All we need now is a DC9 base in Guam. Imagine a DC9 with winglets :)
