Any suggestions/strategies on how to bid? Much appreciated.
There is a youtube video on the front page of the bid package labeled "bidding during a training month". Highly recommend viewing it before you hit submit.

But in a nutshell, you want to put as much credit/time into your shadow period that you can as those trips will go then be taken off your sked put into open time for the category to cover but your bid will determine what you are paid for the month, either the greater of the shadow bid period award, or what you flew on IOE.

Better hurry, less than 5 hrs and counting....

PBI will be my easiest drive by far (~15 minutes), but FLL & MIA are in striking distance if the need arises. I've heard bad things about FLL for commuting, but nothing one way or another about PBI or MIA. Looking at schedule alone, PBI looks pretty good: 11 mainline flights per day, with a couple of SWA flights for good measure. Of course, that may not be the whole story, so, on to my questions...:
  1. What am I in for, jumpseating PBI - ATL & back? Tips/tricks I need to know? Lots of commuters? Sitting on the JS doesn't bother me; not getting on the flight at all does!
  2. Parking? Do we have a FA base there? If so, how do I get a parking pass? If not, should I expect to need FLL often enough to be worth pursuing a parking pass there? (My commuting airport is not a base; I have to pay for my own parking, so my parking privileges are "unused," if I find myself at a FA base.)
  3. If I'm on my own for parking at PBI--options/suggestions?

Thanks for any help/ideas/advice. Cheers!
Who is your wife? I am a delta pilot and compete at the winter equestrian festival in Palm Beach too! You will often see me jumpseating with my damn saddle!!!! And often running for a Jumpseat in britches and my show shirt...which is totally business casual small world

Delta pilots be living the life of luxury down at the Winter Equestrian Festival huh?!?!! Hob nobbing with Bill Gates, Springsteen and Michael
Bloomberg. I feel so poor arriving in the 757 Jumpseat and not on my own GV...

PCS "anomaly": I tried swapping a 5-day for a 3-day and a 2-day over the exact same days. PCS wouldn't allow it due to Reserve Required being equal to Reserve Available.

I didn't think PCS would prevent this swap but it did. When I talked to Scheduling, they said the PCS software isn't really smart enough to see what I was trying to do and saw it as a drop -- which I couldn't due because of Reserve levels. And Scheduling isn't able to manually override PCS even though what I was trying made perfect sense to the scheduler.

PCS is what it is, but does anyone else have experience with not being able to swap in a similar case?

The only thing I could think that might have prevented the swap was that the 3-day and the 2-day combined for ~1.5 hours less of credit time and involved less block time than the 5-day.

Scheduler is totally clueless. You can absolutely swap for trips that cover the exact same days, and block time doesn't play any part. What probably happened is one of two scenarios:

1). There are lots of Q trips in NYC 320b pot. Those trips are trips that someone has tried to personal drop, but there are not enough reserves available to do so. They show up in open time so that if another pilot wishes to whiteslip the trip, they can. However, you cannot swap for them, unless the trip you are dropping has greater reserves available than required on every day of your trip.

2) The trip you are trying to drop releases after 2330-spilling over into the next day. The swap will now look at that as a 6th day, disallowing your swap.

Contract section 23W5 has an excellent discission of how swaps work. (FYI-there are also special rules in place for net reserves over holiday periods.)

It must've been something else; it was neither of those two scenarios, and yes, the scheduler was guessing but regardless, he can't override or manually do the swap.

Silly how our work rules and such are harder to figure out than actually flying the airplane.
