Oh, and if you find my Big Tool, would you please return it to my Wife?
Seems she's forgotten what it's for!

About a dozen years ago I was in MSP waiting to catch a flight home when I saw an old gentleman sporting a mustache and a straw hat in line to board a flight to LAX. No mistaking who he was. I was in uniform and introduced myself- he and his wife could not have been kinder. We chatted for a bit, and when it was time to board he asked if I was joining them for the ride home, and that maybe we could sit together and continue the conversation.
Wish that I had. The man is a national treasure.
Wish that I had. The man is a national treasure.
A LOT of baiting and berating here (including a wife comment, really?) for someone who threw out some rather unconventional concepts.
What I gathered from the pilloried poster:
1. PS is and was a concessionary arrangement in his view.
2. Hard rates are better than at-risk pay that is more easy squandered by management's mis-management.
3. The pilots who go out and crush their yearly pay hours get higher variable pay.
4. He thinks we should consider annuities paid by the company.
1. In some ways PS IS a concession. The oft touted C2K had $0 in PS. Pretty sure the NWA 1998 agreement didn't have PS either.
It IS a valuable tool (to a point) to motivate employees, but to have it garner as much of our total yearly pay as it's trending going forward is risky, IMO.
With ALL other contractual aspects remaining constant, given the choice between an additional:
A) $30k in Mid-Feb 2015, when earned beginning in Jan 2014,
OR
B) $2000/mo every month in 2014 and $6k in mid-Feb. 2015,
Which would you choose?
2. For every dollar in PS, it stays constant every year, and iflation eats away at it's purchasing power. Every dollar you move to the pay rates get compounded every year by subsequent raises and work rule enhancements. Also see the question above, IMO, money now is better than that same money later.
3. I think (I could have it backwards) guy was saying "stop rewarding the flying hookers", i.e. if we aren't going to change size of the PS dollar pool to fixed rates, then we should consider flattening the payout to all pilots more equally. I don't have much of an opinion although for me personally it probably works about the same either way; maybe not so for others.
4. Everyone can make that choice for themselves every year with the current payout. I don't really want my money tied up in an annuity, I'd rather investment dollars build wealth now and use that to generate income later. (everyone has their own investment philosophy, not getting into that discussion, DYODD)
I don't love all his ideas, but offhand dismissal of people when they have other concepts is just as bad. He's been a contrarian for a long time, and critical of many of the things done as a matter of convention. Dude earned his banhammer somehow, "do the crime, do the time" but there was some pretty low comments sent his direction. This used to be a more open place, and not as nasty like most other boards. Kinda sad for all of us.
It'd be of benefit for all of us here to start with, "Hmm, not how I'd go about it, but interesting..", rather than "You are terrible and no one should ever do or think that, leave and never post here again".

Jumpseat question....Going to St Marten in Feb....As a Delta pilot, is the jumpseat process the same as a normal domestic flight?
Fly confirmed for less question....If I purchase a refundable Fly Confirmed for Less ticket for my wife, can I turn it in for a refund a day prior to the trip, if the loads look good for nonrev in instead?
Thanks!

What you laid out was well thought out and presented in a coherent way. He basically said "we should trade profit sharing for $5,000/year." Then he said it over and over again. I'm all for civil discussion of different ideas but it was pretty clear he was here to stir the pot.
He hadn't posted until today and then went full throttle. He admitted to having other screen names which, presumably, had already been banned. He's a troll.

FO, the real history lesson is that anything we negotiate is "earned" and "paid for" or "traded for.." something; and in 3-5 years its ALL up for grabs. Buying when its worthless and selling when it is high is the opposite of "buy high and sell low." Should we wait till the company is losing money and THEN try to swap PS for a raise...? ....great plan there! That's what the "monetize it" contingent is pointing out. I personally feel strongly both ways. I want a decent raise and keep decent profit sharing. I don't know what form our next agreement will take. I expect significant improvements and don't plan to yield a lot in exchange. I also realize a concession to many on the Forum would be viewed as a fair exchange by others. Same data, different opinions, we vote. OFG

Doing 2 days and 1 night in SXM.
Then boarding Windstar cruise for Antigua, 3 stops in the BVI's, and St. Barts.
The BVI stops are Sopers Hole, Jose Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, Anegada....Nice thing about Windstar is it's only 300 people, stops are off the beaten path (no other cruise ships) and the stay in port a long time...often overnight. Plus food is actually great.
We did this cruise 3 years ago and loved it.
Once off the cruise, we will ferry from SXM to Anguilla for 4 days/3 nights in a beach villa on Shoal Bay.
Anyway, got a lot of cash tied up and don't want to chance nonreving.
