Remember all the incidents we had in '08 when new hires went straight to the ER? Yeah. Me neither.

You are kidding yourself that there is a crisis of leadership. Almost without fail the guys who do well in captain upgrade are the junior guys who bid it early. The ones who struggle are the long term wide body FOs who spent the last ten years worried about fish or steak for dinner and paid zero attention to how the captain was running the flight deck. Let them go back to the right seat of a wide body. The younger guys do just fine.

Xray,

I basically agree with what you are saying but you are greatly simplifying the issue. Many Seniors FOs did not have the quick upgrade opportunity due to 9-11, outsourcing and age 65. Now things are changing, but many are enjoying the very high QOL that summer vacations, weekends off, LCA drops, and the GS opportunities that often become available to senior FOs.

IMHO - If guys want to upgrade quickly - great for them, anyone hired by DAL should do great. If guys want to camp out in the right seat - great for them, more opportunity for other guys to upgrade quickly.

One of the best things about this job is that "One mans trash is another mans gold."

That's not true (I don't think). You only get paid straight pay for the trip you work plus straight pay for the dropped trip. That's why there isn't a white slip with conflict. It would be the same thing.

I fly with our most senior F/O's every trip, some have more than 30 years seniority and can hold a line as a 777 Captain, yet they prefer to fly 777 F/O, drop LOE trips, fly green slips, work less, make more than some of the 777 Captains. Many have already 'been there done that' on the narrow body domestic Captain gig, and got sick of putting up with the crap that is domestic narrow body flying.

They have done the math and it just doesn't make economic sense for them to go fly narrow body Captain (again). They are either never going to upgrade (again) or wait until they can move from the right seat to the left seat of the wide body jet they are already on.

There are probably 50% of my new hire class, 26 years ago, who have never upgraded to the left seat!

They are flying ultra senior WB f/o, enjoying all the bennies of those positions!

Also, 1/3rd of our class has moved back to WB f/o for the very same reasons.

I might entertain the idea of A350 B as my retirement position, if I can earn (almost) as much as I do now!

When do W-2s usually come out?

Generally, after someone else files a fraudulent return in your name. Ymmv

If you get them electronically, looks like between Jan 18th and 22nd - looking back at past years.

If you look too soon, you can download a previous tax document, but it will charge you. The most recent one there is no charge (every year someone asks that question, "Why is Delta charging me for my W-2!!!"
