I ended up having to PD a shadow trip in order to have a specific day off. Requested day off in icrew like I was supposed to. OE planner called me and told me if I wanted that day off, I would have to PD the shadow trip and lose the pay. I had never heard of that before. I could have easily bid that day off when shadow bidding, but since it was a shadow bid, I didn't worry about it. Cost me money because I didn't and still don't understand shadow bidding. Also watched all the videos and read the contract. ALPA said it's right though. I never saw any references about PDing a shadow trip for days off.

Wow, this sounds like a rouge OE planner to me. That's completely nonsensical. Someone else was already flying that trip, and it was never even on your schedule. Shadow trips are a pay determination tool only.

Any chance it was the gentleman who used to be on the ER and is now on the 717?

edit: and now I see you said "she". not the same person.

I could tell you some stories....

hockeypilot44 11-25-2016 07:24 AM

To clarify, the specific day was Thanksgiving. I had a 1 day in Thanksgiving for my shadow bid. Took LOE on 21st. Asked for 24th off. 737 OE planner called me and said she as an OE trip starting on Thanksgiving, but she saw that I wanted it off. She said I could either PD the shadow trip and lose 5:15 pay or work Thanksgiving. I chose to PD the trip. Emailed ALPA scheduling because this didn't seem right to me. ALPA said she was right and allowed to do that. Lesson learned. FWIW, I am senior enough on both planes to get holidays and weekends off. I ended up with a carryout shadow trip that ended up being a 2 hour one day. This most definitely cost me a few hours of pay. I still don't understand shadow bid. Understand theory, but not the actual practice of it.

It sure sounds to me like she was trying very hard to do you a favor. She has to fill that LOE slot if she has a body. You are available and completely legal for the trip. She was extremely nice and rather then make you miss the holiday called and gave you a option to make yourself unavailable. The only way to do that is a PD. There has to be a financial penalty to taking that PD or everyone would place PD's all over their shadow periods. If it were me I would be calling her with a thank you.

That's what ALPA said. I could have bid Thanksgiving off on my shadow period. I'm not mad at OE planner. I'm thankful I was able to get day off. I just wish I would have known to bid the day off in my shadow period. I could have had that credit on a different day that I wouldn't have had to personal drop. This post is for other people's info. Bid off days in shadow period that you want off.

You got that day off, seniority has benefits hockeypilot44. After your yes vote allows this TA to pass, kiss that goodbye.

So if we vote yes on this TA, seniority will no longer have any benefits??

I just knew it would be Hockey's fault if this thing passes. Now we will all have to work Thanksgiving.
