I just retired with 30 years combined active/reserve including 16 years at DAL + Reserves. There is no way MIL LV should count to the GS trigger. Does anyone really think a guy should be able to do 3 weeks with his reserve gig and have the opportunity for every trip at DAL to pay as a G/S?
The reserve retirement is compensation enough and far outweighs the opportunity cost of missing a few GSs. Scoop I don't understand why this is so outrageous? |
I'm guessing the same reason some would find utilizing strategic sick leave to enhance GS opportunities.
I'm going to suggest to you the same reason I find it unacceptable. using sick leave....and/or mil leave...to improve ones access to premium flying is in effect taking money out of another line pilots pocket who is unable (or unwilling) to do so....yet is still actually working a full schedule to produce the revenue that enables paying that premium override. |
Got it. Sounds like I'm not going to change anyone's mind. As long is military duty is clumped together with strategic sick use, personal drops, vacation, etc., many of you will fear that we military types are just out to take money from your pocket. Frankly, I appreciate the honesty... I have a better understanding of why those on the 4th floor feel justified in harassing us.

its not likely you are dealing with 4th floor types here. and if you are under the impression management has recently arrived at their starchy pov IRT mil reservist....you are entirely misinformed.
like Capt. Scoop....i am a retired reservist. who had to negotiate my service doing things like using my vacation for acdutra cycles. not because i was a dedicated employee.....but because the pay here was SO BAD i couldnt afford to drop trips....and still pay my bills. even with the reserve money. if you do not understand what i am trying to explain IRT respecting your fellow line pilots and their economic contributions and earning opportunites.....i would suggest you are harboring an attitude far more suited to the 4th floor than anything said here to try and provide explaination to your questions. |
btw.....you might want to appreciate until the recent past....GS flying was ONLY available to lineholders.
and there WAS NO 'batting rotation' for premium flying. so if your fellow line pilots....perhaps before you even were on property.....didnt have the concern for even the most junior among this group.....you would likely have nothing to complain about right now. and that didnt come from the 4th floor. |

And as far as access to premium pay goes, the fact that airline pilots leave to do military duty does nothing but enhance premium pay opportunities for everyone else. If you want to make double-duty miserable enough that people leave the military, it will be that many fewer jobs for those waiting to get hired. And I know I sit below dozens if not hundreds of military members on the seniority list, and if they all came back I would get bumped down. |
how about you ask a non reservist line pilot how they view your idea?
preferably.....one who is at least one number jr to you. maybe they can explain it more clearly to you. |

How about combine it with vacation? A week of vacation, and a week of mil leave will put you near the trigger. I am sure there are other ways but those are two easy ones right off the top of my head. |

This is precisely the "entitlement" attitude I was referring to in an earlier post. You think it is fair to non-military Delta pilots that you want CREDIT for LEAVE days you are NOT AT DELTA while you get full pay and benefits from Uncle Sam? Really? Executive Summary --> "Credit" for "Leave" days?? YGBSM. If I personal drop trips to generate my own leave days, I do NOT expect Delta to give me "Credit" for those days. BECAUSE I WON'T BE AT DELTA WORK. (Well, and also because I don't feel entitled) . |
