Another logbook strategy, if you are so inclined, is to export and save your monthly Pilot Activity Statements. They list every flight flown and can be a poor man's emergency logbook if needed in the future. With a little bit of effort the data can be imported into an electronic logbook program. Once I figured out an import routine my logbook takes no more than 5 minutes to update every month.
Thanks |

Would you mind expounding on what you mean by "import routine?" Do you mean for paper or electronic logbook?
Thanks After figuring that process out, I added an extra step where I first copy the PAS info into a spreadsheet I designed to convert ship numbers into N-numbers. That's really getting into the weeds though and I wouldn't have bothered if I hadn't already figured it out for logging time at my last job. A much simpler method would be to log the Delta ship number and save the aircraft list mentioned earlier as a decoder ring. |

I switched to electronic logbook in the years trying to escape the regionals, Logbook Pro specifically. It made the constant application updates much easier and eliminated math errors. As far as my import routine, I start by exporting the Pilot Activity Statement and opening it in Excel. I then delete the rows that don't include flight segments, including pay summaries, deadheads, etc. I save what is left as a text file (tab delimited), which I can then import into Logbook Pro using the Import Wizard. The first time doing that you need to tell the program which columns of information are what, but you can save those settings so that future imports go quicker. I usually do this monthly after the mid-month paycheck. I imagine it could work similarly with LogTen, etc.

I didn't start out thinking I wouldn't keep track of every tenth of an hour I flew, but now, I intend never to touch my logbook again. I'll guess at it.
And one day when I buy my dream plane... a Cessna 172N... I still won't log anything. Just got burned out on it. |
