Quick and dirty on DTW and the -9:

Detroit hotels are fairly cheap compared to everything I've been hearing. If you leave the airport plan on $55 per night. I think you can find chaper, too. A great deal, that is super convenient is the airport Westin. for $75 you can stay right in the airport and not have to deal with van times because you can walk right out into the terminal.

The airport as a whole is very commuter friendly. By that I mean it rarely has delays due to congestion. In 14+ years, I can count the times I have had to hold to get in there on two hands. The only possible inconvenience is if you commute offline. AMR. UAL, CAL, SWA and everyone else in in the area where the old terminal used to be, so you have to grab an inter airport shuttle to get to the NWA terminal. Which by the way is a nice terminal and simple to get around . Its one long concourse for the mainline (and Compass) filled with sub-par resturaunts that charge $10 for a sandwhich and $7 for some buffalo wings (I hate them for that).

As for the DC-9, the training is straightforward. You get used to flying the sims after a few times in the box and the instructors are laid back and very knowledgeable. If you are checking out in the left seat, they just want you to be organized. The airplane flies great. When you mentioned that the -88 had quirks, I could not think of any for the -9. At least not flying wise. The airplanes are pretty well put together. I can remember a time a few years ago, we were holding to get into JFK, when the remnants of a hurricane was beating up the East Coast, a 757 and a RJ flamed out an engine in the holding stack above and below us. But, the -9 kept pushing along. Airplane-wise, you have to watch out for de-icing fluid in your cups in the winter time and passing out from a heat stroke in the summer time. But, after a while you figure out how to keep the airplane cool. They give us these cool little shades to put in the window. So yeah, the airplane is old, but you feel super manly when you are flying it. :)

To sum it up, I like the base and I like the airplane. I will be sad to see it go when it does. I think that's about it from me. I hope this helps.

Could be, but just looking at the flights, DTW has gone from RJ flights to mainline. ATL is a whole lot bigger with a whole lot better connectivity.

Knew - thanks for the Intel. Any idea if they will keep the trips 5 days and commutable? What are the rotations like?

Throw in all the positive space pilots going to and from training and management folks traveling back and forth and the nightmare gest worse.

Do you mean ATL guys commuting somewhere else, or more pilots who live somewhere else commuting to ATL?

I think you see more pilots who live in ATL commuting to another base, but less pilots commuting to ATL.

So yes, what you're referring to does happen ATL - MSP - ATL. How about DFW? I've never seen a management type on the JS to NYC, just a couple LCA doing required checks.

Yup, the new FOM for DALN, I dont know if the Southies are getting new FOM, but it is in there.
