TOKYO (Reuters) - Shares of Japan Airlines <9205.T> fell more than 5 percent on Wednesday after the Nikkei business daily reported the Development Bank of Japan (DBJ) and the Ministry of Finance are seeking court-led bankruptcy proceedings. The state-owned DBJ, JAL's largest creditor, favors a prepackaged-bankruptcy option, which is also preferred by the government-backed Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corp of Japan, the paper said. JAL, Asia's largest carrier by revenue, is seeking its fourth state bailout since 2001 as it grapples with $16 billion in debt, a massive pension deficit and dozens of unprofitable flight routes. Shares of JAL were down 5.6 percent at 85 yen at 0021 GMT, underperforming a 0.2 percent gain in the benchmark Nikkei average <.N225>. |

Add "again" to that statement and it would be more accurate. There are still a couple hundred furlough bypass guys who will soon return on top of current Delta pilots. At the bottom there are pilots on BOTH sides that got a pretty unfair merger result using rational benchmarks to keep score of what was the status quo.
Hopefully, if they decide to merge again, it will be done during a period of expansion as to reduce the harm to pilots who have already seen a decade of stagnation and in some cases, steady moves down the ladder. FWIW, Alaska is not so large a group that Delta would need to make the same compromises to keep the AS side happy. With the input of a more balanced MEC more intent on representing its members (instead of National and without the pressure of Mutual Assured Destruction) I would expect a much better outcome than the junior pilots received in the last round of forced mating. Honestly, as a very junior guy myself, I don't care if they are merged in on top of me, as long as they are fenced off of the international equipment. I don't mind waiting my turn to do the flying I want to do, but I sure as hell don't want to see 1400 pilots who never had any hope of doing that flying at their carrier, slide in on top of me. HELL NO! |
