For the record, I commute almost exclusively on Comair. The employees of Comair-- pilots, flight attendants, and gate agents-- have treated me very well, and I appreciate their efforts.

As I mentioned several times before, Communist Air guys are welcome on my JS only because I know our guys need reciprocity. Otherwise, they can just walk.

You are right, and scope was not traded for bargaining credit. I don't know where $600 mm came up but that is a fictitious number that was never used by ALPA at any time. The COMPANY came up with a rationale about the economic impact of the 200 79 seat aircraft and that rationale was used to justify the contract rejection.

In the end a compromise was made, just like compromises were made in EVERY section of our contract. Just to go over some inconvenient truths:

Every labor group that took their decision to the judge had their contract rejected
After contract rejection, every labor group was given an injunction to prevent them from striking
After contract rejection, no labor group did any better than management's last offer

With a contract rejection we would have allowed 200 79 seat aircraft. We compromised on 30 76 seat aircraft with more allowed for mainline growth. Following that compromise, Delta did not get rid of their smallest aircraft but instead added new aircraft and increased their flying. They hired 700 new pilots. The final question is, did our compromise increase job security for Delta pilots or decrease it?

No one can answer what would have happened had we not accepted the compromise, no matter how distasteful it was. Certainly the history that followed shows that things would probably have been worse. Sometimes you don't have good choices you only have to pick between a crappy choice and a really crappy choice.

People can try to Monday morning quarterback, but if you do, you need to really go back and examine the facts on the ground as they existed and not create some alternate reality where senior pilots are sipping pina coladas and figuring out how to screw ASA pilots out of their Delta captain jobs while they basked in luxury. We have all eaten it in the last few years, no one was spared.

Bar, OMG, can you imagine those SLI negotiations? What a nightmare. I can just see the US Air guys getting stapled to the bottom below the AW guys. My advice: Get four different crew parking lots. One for UAL guys, one for their Scabs, one for the USAIR pilots, and one for the AW guys. If not, make everyone go through metal detectors to prevent them from shooting each other in the parking lot. What a mess. I'm glad our pilot group seems to be getting along fairly well. And just because I make all DAL N guys do every preflight doesn't mean I don't love them. I am sooooo kidding again. I haven't even had the pleasure of flying with one yet. I truly look forward to it.
