BTW, I agree with you about all the other little areas Delta throws money away. While that is very frustrating, I just don't think it leads to a logical conclusion that we shouldn't care and try to operate efficiently whenever we can do so safely and without compromising our product to our customers.

Anyway... just my "2 cents", FWIW.

Don't disagree at all......

Delta Looks to Simplify Tow and Tug Processes on Taxiways
Ability to drive aircraft on taxiways will help airline reduce flight delays and fuel consumption
Mar 29, 2007

GIBRALTAR, March 29, 2007 – WheelTug plc and Delta Air Lines entered into an agreement in which the airline will assist WheelTug in developing a new system that has the potential to enable pilots to back away from gates without a tow tug, and taxi to and from takeoff and landing points without using jet engines. The new WheelTug™ system aims to reduce fuel consumption, noise and emissions in airport terminal areas and taxiways, as well as reduce airport and gate congestion that can lead to reduced ground equipment delays.

Thanks for finding this. The Googles are amazing aren't they.

A quick question about reserve:

Just caught this in 11.5.1 of the FOM on the last revision (still finding everything else). Does anyone know if ALPA is working on a new commuter policy for the post 2010 AE scenario?

Commuting Policy (Call in Honest)

Pilots assume responsibility for arriving at their domicile in sufficient time and with adequate rest, in accordance with the FARs, prior to beginning scheduled duty. The “Call in Honest” policy is intended to recognize that prudent planning can, on rare occasions, be foiled by unforeseen circumstances. It is not intended to solve problems caused by poor planning. This policy applies to pilots who are regular line holders and international pilots on ultra long call reserve. This policydoes not apply to domestic reserve and international reserve pilots either on shortcall or long call, except when returning from duty immediately following “X”days.

In order to avail himself of this policy, the pilot must take certain actions. For example, if commuting by air, pilots should ensure a minimum of a primary and a backup flight (on and/or offline), both of which have actual seat availability, based on counts within 24 hours of departure, and are scheduled to arrive at a reasonable time prior to report. The backup flight should not be scheduled to depart within
two hours of the scheduled departure time of the primary flight.
If, after taking the above actions, an on-time sign-in will not be possible, the pilot must call Crew Scheduling. Crew Scheduling may, at their discretion, elect to do
either of the following:
• Deadhead the pilot (no pay or credit) to join the rotation.
• Personal drop the rotation.

It is my understanding that the added weight of this device was so great that in the long run it cost more to haul it around than it saved on the ground.

Commuting Policy (Call in Honest)

Management policy has always discouraged commuting to reserve.
If we really want a policy that makes it easy to sit reserve in some city that is a plane ride from your domicile, I imagine it would cost us big time at the bargaining table.

They could probably buy enough tugs to tow us to the runway for less than that mod would cost

This is what the vast majority of pilots from both sides actually do. I rarely hear of a guy sitting long call in base if he lives within a few states, never.

Sweet! Is the call what I think it is? Always nice to have people returning from bypass. Did they give any information on when?
