Guys,
If you get tired of fighting the 2008 version of North vs. South, I recommend the 1863 version. The technology and processes were so superior on the North side that the South didn't have a chance.
The Southern boys have been sharpshooters but they sure weren't standardized. And the North, they may have had technological superiority, but they couldn't adopt very quickly to a changing environment.
Oh wait, why are we even still arguing about history? I agree you must know your history to avoid repeating mistakes, but why keep arguing about it?

Here's the problem: Since there's no command, what happens if the captain doesn't notice that you didn't move the flaps uncommanded? This double distraction scenario is exactly why the industry has moved towards commands and responses. With our operation, this important system activation is entirely silent.
Recent events should give you and all of us pause about the wisdom of this current policy. I know you know which ones I'm talking about.

It is just the way of the scheduling world these days.
I had a SC trip recently that they never called me for. It was about eight hrs after it was assigned to me, and nope, never got a call.

Well Carl in that case it would have to be not a double distraction, but a quintuple distraction. If you have missed the first two, you would have to miss it on the TAXI CHECKLIST, then agian on the BEFORE T/O CHECKLIST and the T/O CONFIG WARNING would have to fail before you t/o with out flaps.
All the standard SOPA/SMAC procedures in the world will not cover up for a weak pilot. Bad pilots will make mistakes no matter how standard your procedures are.
Procedures should allow for some flexibility. If you need a bunch of overly rigid procedures to protect your ass, you are in the wrong business.

And if that becomes the case we're going to end up with Northerners retiring in the south and Southerners in the north, just like 140 years ago. Thats an odd one.

to add on to that, if the captain can't notice that the flaps are not set before taking off......checklist or not, then he/she is an incompetent fool who should not be in a control seat at a major airline.
