In the past when the company has issued a 365 day bid, how long would it typically take for a very junior pilot to go to training on the airbus? And if they do a 365 day bid, when is the soonest they could put out another bid? I'm am considering bidding new equipment sometime within the next year, but wouldn't want to actually have to go back into training till at least September. Just curious what people would suggest.

Ha! That would be funny. He's only 7 so I guess he would qualify as a Republic pilot. Leg one today had the funky code but leg two he's a normal s3, same as the wifey. Last time this happened I found out there were two ppr numbers in the system for him. When me merged the north system had one ppr number while the south had the correct number in the system. Every trip to grandma's house cost $100 in fines. Eventually it was fixed. Don't know where the k228 number comes from though. Oh well, I guess I'll find out on the next paycheck. Hope my wife drinks lots of booze on this leg.....777 business class baby!!!

Unfortunately, it's pretty much impossible to predict the answer to that question. The only thing definite is that you'll start getting the pay for the new category one year after the bid comes out. As a new hire, I would think that it would be unlikely that you would get training before next September, but that's just a guess.

The new ATC system will require it, so I'm not sure there's any wiggle room.

There is a little problem with that the FCC is going to have to sort out.

Do you want a reliable GPS signal or blazing 4G data speeds? According to a pair of engineers at Garmin International, you might be able to get one, but not both.

Researching the expansion of new 4G networks, Scott Burgett and Bronson Hokuf performed a series of lab simulations to see if the GPS satellite band would be affected by the planned rollout of some 40,000 4G base stations on the ground. GPS satellites have been transmitting signals on the bands between 1559 and 1610 megahertz for decades, but the proposed 4G stations would be occupying a similar spectrum – in the 1525 to 1559 MHz range.

During their tests, Burgett and Hokuf discovered that the overlap has the potential to seriously compromise GPS reception that "will result in widespread, severe GPS jamming [and] will deny GPS service over vast areas of the United States."

Back when GPS first came out, to get the reliability of the signal desired for approaches, GPS repeaters were used. This allowed you to put a repeater within 25 nm of an airport(s) and voila (the correct spelling) you had a reliable GPS approach. This was before the military allowed everyone to have the accurate signal.

GPS is generally not the primary system, it is an updater of nav systems. So, why do you need awesome GPS prior to the terminal area?

I go back and forth between the two formats each month to download to my calendar and download to my phone.

Thanks - works like a champ. :)

The iPad is going to have to fix the very big problem of screen glare. At altitude during the day, the screen is all but unreadable due to glare.

A) Does it keep you from playing a word on scrabble?

B) The only time you need charts is in the clouds. :D
