Wasn't somebody at some point playing chess?

Oh, that's right, it was Gary Ichan over at SWA.

I just don't understand why, if you're genuinely in favor of hard-fought negotiations to attain the best contract possible, you continuously attempt to explain why we won't get what we demand. Why am I paying dues for this?

You are telegraphing management that DALPA is not going to man up in negotiations. This perception is shared by a large number of us. You are weakening our position!

Isn't that management's job?

I am on record here many times stating what I consider a reasonable contract. It exceeds what SW has. I am also a realist and what I have posted has over and over again been far more correct then many others. I as a example caught lots of heat for saying Delta management would never buy a 100 seat aircraft over the last 4 years.
I will also point out that I have made my feelings known to management behind signed letters. I did not lack the courage to only make comments on forums hiding my identity from management. Because of that I have had to have personal conversations with both the VP of flight ops and the CEO of Delta airlines to counsel me on my attitude. I doubt many on the forum can make that claim. I put my job on the line with the CEO in defense of the pilots furloughed by management for political reasons.
I did not post what I believe managements opener will be to further any DALPA goal. I posted it because it reflects the reality of how Delta management feels and thinks. If anyone on this forum thinks otherwise they have had their head in the sand and not read any of management comments over the last few years.
If we are going to get anywhere close to SW wages and retain the aspects of our contract that are better then SW it will come only as a long struggle. A struggle that will require a united pilot group. It is a struggle that will be won or lost behind the scenes in DC via political means. I can only conclude that those who at this stage support DPA would prefer to see DALPA fail and of course the pilots lose income and quality rather then work as a unified group to get the very best contract possible. DPA leadership itself when they started their effort fully recognized the danger this posed and gave themselves a hard deadline to end the process to insure a unified group. Sadly they abandoned what was a correct and smart initial choice for what we have today. Management is toasting them every night on the 4th floor.
I want the very best contract I can get for my family. Some think that only requires demanding the most up front. Those who feel that way sadly have not studied the history of contracts under the railway labor act. They would be wise to do so.

I honestly don't know how some of you guys keep up with all the posts, and respond in a timely manner. I realize this is "pages ago" but I wanted to give Sailing his due. Please indulge me...

Sailing,

While I disagree with you fairly frequently, I respect your opinion and appreciate the thought you put into your posts, and your perspective. I DO recall well what you've said regarding what it will take to get a yes vote from you on our upcoming contract....

I, for one, and I'm sure I speak for many on this forum, appreciate what you've done regarding furthering the interests of Delta pilots in general.

Integrity is something that I believe in very, very strongly and I appreciate that quality in others. Thank You!

As far as gains go. Yours seem pretty good to me. I doubt however that if some of those are not achieved that there will be a huge influx of donut cards that would have the effect of throwing DALPA out right in the middle of negotiations. I think the donuts have served a purpose. They DID make DALPA sit up and take notice. Now however, they are only divisive. time to go back to the sidelines or get involved in doing the work that is going to be needed, or enjoy the crap they will help shovel on our heads...

How many of the 4000 are active? That is a standard DALPA answer. They can be activated again if needed. I will tone this donut talk down, but needless to say if the next TA is weak, the donut revolution very well may grow. That is the warning.

Here's a little nugget:

SW is pulling all Airtran out of DFW.
304,000 enplanements/year left for someone to pick up without poaching any of AMR's flying...

Cheers
George

Quick, delploy the RJs. What? They're all at LGA?

That's OK. DALPA will acquiesce to a side letter granting scope relief so the company can "fill the vacuum" in DFW with "Delta-branded flying." It's in our best interest, naturally. Please call your congressman to help get approval.

Luckily DALPA, ever on the ball, will obtain a very sincere verbal pledge from management to "give serious thought to considering the possibility of transitioning to a few mainline flights at some point in the distant future." :D

And yours is a standard donut retort to the question.. well... how many ARE active? You make the inactive cards sound like military reserves. That right there is funny stuff. Don't you think that there is a fair number of them that just signed with the intent of sending DALPA a message and have no intent of voting DALPA out? I certainly do. I know a few that have done just that. I even thought about it myself until I discovered just how shady they are.. and decided I wanted no part of them. Your personal "warning" means bupkus. However, you may be right that the donuts will grow if there is a weak TA.. but then again.. maybe not. It depends on what they can deliver. So like you, I will stop with this talk on this thread.. you can have the last word.
