80 point bucket range.
I have a question, if we're going to make a system that results in senior pilots not flying on reserve while pilots a few % points below them, or even 1 number below them, pick up all of their flying why don't we make a system where the senior regular pilots get paid alv but don't work and their flying is done by a pilot a few % points below them for no pay? If its fair for reserve why not regular line holders?

FTB,
I do not think the junior guys will hosed with this new reserve system and this is why.
1. When I was hired the reserve system was heavily weighted to the senior guys - to the point the junior guys would max out and we would be short at the end of the month. This required more reserves and the company did not like this system.
2. The sytem that is now ending ending spread the flying out much more evenly. The company liked it because all other things being equal this required less pilots. Senior guys didn't think it weighed seniority enough.
3. Now we have the new reserve system. Junior guys are worried that they will again do all the flying while the senior guys sit at home. I don't think this will happen for the simple reason that the company desires to spread the flying as evenly as possible. If, in fact, junior guys start flying a disproportionate amount wouldn't the company just fine tune the RAW buckets?
I thought the 80 RAW point bucket was variable and could be adjusted each month - is this not correct?
We can all speculate how this might play out but we really won't know for sure until we see this play out - probably through a whole annual cycle covering both the busy and slow months.
Scoop - My 2 Cents.

FWIW, I'm one of the most junior reserves to get weekends off. I flew 1 trip in January along with just about everyone else on reserve with weekends off. Under the new system, there will be pilots that will not fly a trip the whole month while I fly at least 2 four-days to get me into bucket 2. I don't mind the system, but 80 seems really high to get to the second bucket in my category. I am going to be number one to go out every Monday until I get into the second bucket. We are talking about really over-staffed months right now also. In the summer when everyone flies, things might be different.
The new system is a great leap forward.
Making the RAW buckets more nuanced would make it more effective.
Make the first bucket 40 or less
Make short call, training and vacation count just as much as flying, how about just using credit....
Cheers
George
Scoop, I understand what you're saying and I agree the result will be fine tuning in the months ahead. But if it's not....

However scoop, how much of the reduction in staffing on reserve was PBS based and not pilots timing out?

Do any of you know for a reserve, I got in late and went into my X day by 55 minutes, do I get another X day or anything? I called scheduling and he said I get my 55 minutes back and I said "off of what?" and he said my next long call period will start at 12:55am. This doesn't really make sense because on my first day on I can be scheduled as early as 6 am as long as it is on the schedule before 3. Right now there are no notes on my schedule, and my first day on call is in the next month, so I don't even see how they would know that. How does that work? can they not give me short call or I can't get a trip till 6:55 or was he wrong?
Thanks.
Thanks.

You lost me at "Week 1"
I think you are in the minority. There were quite junior guys in my category who did not fly at all last month on reserve.
If someone's able to go all all month without flying, it absolutely should be the senior guy (if he/she wants it).
On the off chance someone gets to sit all month, it should be the senior guy.

As far as junior pilots not flying but a senior pilot flying that's possible but not the norm. It's the ymmv part. Which I had to look up.

Second, the buckets can be varied. I'm sure scheduling isn't going to want to end up with some guys reaching ALV (junior) while others (senior) aren't flying. I'm guessing the buckets will be moved around.
There is going to be some adjustments and I'm sure some unintended consequences. Sounds like FTB thinks there will be one with the bucket sizes - there may, he just liked to use his calculator and add up numbers doesn't he?
