It's not either or. Grow big - absolutely - grow small as well. It is not a zero sum proposition as some still would have you believe, and we have seen how well trading small for big works.

The only furlough protection that means anything is flowing to smaller jets on your own property.

Gloopy,
I'm afraid you're correct. Our 747/777 fleets are small in comparison with AMR / UCAL. I'd like to see that change!

RA would buy 777s in a heart beat, if and only if, it'd be more advantageous for DAL pilots to fly them. Right now, it appears DAL is more interested in JVs/Code Shares.
I should have been more specific. I meant from an airplane order standpoint. Of course he's buying used planes now. Theyre cheap. As are the 737-900ERs. So cheap that they're cash flow positive. Why order airplanes for high lease payments when GTF/light composite aircraft are on the way? The 767-300's will keep chugging along. As will MD90's, DC9's, etc.

We pride ourselves on being the best pilots in the industry. And, in my opinion, we are. The company can't grow and WE can't grow if we don't aspire to build our WB fleet. I saw an Aeroflot 777 take off from LA last night on its way to Moscow. Do you know how many 777s we have? Frikkin Aeroflot? Which we now code share by the way. We are quickly becoming a ticket brokering regional carrier. Not what I have in mind.
The problem with your premise is that WE don't decide which airplanes to fly. It would be cool if we could simply tell the company "Dammit, we are the best pilots in the world so we demand you double our wide body fleet. Look at Emirates, Etihad, and Aeroflot."
Also, what do you think bringing on 100 or so E190s would do to your seniority? I would bet that after the dust settles post-bid, you could hold 777 F/O with some incredible seniority. Growth, no matter the airframe, benefits everybody except the top 5%. Right now, I don't think we have much say in wide body growth.

It wasn't canceled from what I just heard from tech ops, awaiting money is where it's at

How many 777's, 744's, 787's do our direct competitors have or on order? We are going not going to be a major player in the intl market with a smattering of the above, and the 7ER as our major WB fleet. Locking up JV's is as crucial as stemming NB bleed with the 3:1 76 seat no rollback over 767 mainline. We are vulnerable from both ends of section 1.

We're not talking about just small jets... We're talking about more metal coming to Delta, period. Not getting excited about more aircraft coming to property is very very short sighted.

Exactly. And we don't want to take it in either vulnerable end.

Spot on. You hit the nail on the head.

I don't want just big metal, I don't want just small metal. I want all of it with double breasted van admirals in the seats.
