Any "Latest & Greatest" about Delta?
Smart schedulers recognize that its to their advantage to have you take the commute in option. Your now obligated by the contract to be available 2 hours after your shortcall start. If they were to need you right away your on the hook. If you don't take the option then availability is defined by several factors but your not required to be there in two hours contractually.
Normal S/C response time (commute option not used) is "readily" or "promptly" available...generally accepted as you have your phone and you'll get there as soon as you can (generally accepted as two hours, but not in stone).
Now, jailhouse lawyer me thinks like this: If I use the 2 hr commute, when my commute flight lands, I turn on my phone. If there are no messages, I am right back to the promptly available and I go to my hotel.
My experience has been that if I use the 2 hr commute option, scheds generally won't release me early. I play it by my commute flights and my fleets departure times (I don't have a sexy voice). For example I dont try to get released early unless there is a flight home that leaves early. And I dont sweat the release (too hard) if there are no departures or sign ins within a reasonable boundary of time around my s/c release time ie: if my flt home leaves 1/2 hr before my s/c release time I just get on it. (This probably doesn't work at all domestically because there are a constant departures).
That said, the shortest I've been "shortcalled" on the 777 is about 6 hours before departure. It was my only callout on the plane in 5+ years. (caveat: I am on reserve about 4-6 months a year due to inability to build a line) If I could get a schedule year round without fail, I would never sit reserve as a commuter.

Yes, and I have saved them with a special ring tone, the piano riff one on the iphone. If you want to figure out who ftb is in the crewroom, play that ring tone.
The guy you see in the fetal position, sweating perfusely, tears flowing, possibly grabbing his left arm while sucking his thumb with a "WTH!?!? Why would you ever use that as a ringtone!!!?" look.
The other day, some folks at the car dealership where I went to pick up a part were very confused by the situation developing in their waiting room when some woman got a phone call and decided to let her phone ring and ring and ring.

Here's the song I had as a ringtone on my old cell ph. when I was on reserve: Five For Fighting - Superman (Lyrics) - YouTube
One day I'm in the ATL Domestic lounge, and SD comes in for one of those "Lounge Briefings", so of course, two minutes into his speal, sceds calls me.
I let it ring long enough to get through the first line, which got a pretty good laugh from the crowd of other short call commuters in the black chairs.
Like I tell my 4 kids when they start whining, "It's not easy to be me, but it really sucks to be YOU! Now get dressed, because you ARE going to school today!"
Timbo... I have a feeling youre a fun guy to fly with!
thats a compliment. with sarcasm these days i know its hard to tell.

Thanks for the compliment. I always have to fly with my favorite A-hole so I can't say one way or the other, you'd better ask some of my -hard working- F/O's if I'm 'fun'...or just lazy.
My standard brief, "Don't let me wake up and catch you reading!"
I even did a walk around on the 777, once, but just to see the new motors on the LR's...but if you tell anyone, I'll deny it!
Be careful Dads; Part II
Let's just say THE 10 y/o son wanted to learn how to use the weed eater. All safety was demonstrated and splained. THE mom was not too keen, I mean really what could happen if everything and everyone was briefed properly?
Under the watchful eye of the DAD standing close, the SON was masterfully handling the machine in perfect efficient sweeps as he moved closer to the back porch where MOM was standing with a worrisome glare. The DAD could make out the words she was mouthing over the noise and it was something to the effect of "You Son of a B I told you this is not a good idea he is too young" but the DAD failed to see the issue! The DAD's eyes were averted for a mere fraction of a second to offer the wife a thumbs up and big smile. It was at that moment the DAD realized he failed to inform or warn the son of the dangers of not cleaning up after the dog before one begins to attack with the weed eater!
Too late. By the time the DAD looked back to the porch, the Mom was covered in fecal nastiness and clearly mouthing words that I am sure violate the TOS of this forum....
I heard this from the cousin of a friend whose brother Roscoe went to prison with!

That's a lot better than shooting your brother with a bb gun.
Ya gotta love the little testosterone machines.

Thanks, I've just printed this out and stuck it in my bag. With all the stuff I've been reading so I don't screw this up.....this is the best.
One other question. I've got 10 days total availability and since they have SC me over a weekend, can they:
- Put two days SC back to back (wouldn't think so)
- Give me a day off (Sat afternoon/Sun morning) and back on SC
Or will one be enough in my scenario. Thanks, just trying to figure out how many days I'll be in the hotel reading APC.........vs in my study reading APC

They do have to give you 24 hrs off in 7 somewhere on the domestic side. Usually they will tack it on at the end of a trip in my experience. So it may be something odd like 11am sat to 11am sun.
If you have a layover more than 24hrs it is considered your 24 rest in 7 also.

Lemme guess, the only thing that you looked at on that walk around was the motors.
I flew with a CA once who looked at me and said (as it was a torrential downpour), "You have three options: 1. it flew in it will fly out 2. It looked good from the concourse or 3. you can go outside and get wet but I will be staying right here"
