Hillbilly don't you get one "freebie?" I thought the first aircraft you get assigned has no seat lock. So if you get the 73N NYC in class and three months later an AE posts with M88 vacancies, you can bid it. One thing to consider is that changing categories during probation exposes you to another jeopardy event.

If you are interested in ATL, the 717 or the MD88 will work out just fine even if you don't get ATL initially. Which is better would be a personal choice. I think the trips will be relatively comparable when it's all said and done. Even if you were based somewhere other than ATL on either aircraft, the one year category freeze for new-hires would not prevent you from bidding to the same seat in a different base since it would not require qualification training. (DTW 717 B to ATL 717 B for example)

"I'll take check rides for $500." By "jeopardy'" I meant an event such as the check ride where you are being evaluated and could fail. If you do struggle or even fail a check ride, there are more simulator sessions and training at your disposal. However, and no different than most other airlines, there have been new hires who have washed out in training and had to leave. I am by no means trying to scare anyone but if you're comfortable with the "glass magic" you might think twice about bidding the M88 while you're on probation.

I wasn't aware of this, thanks. I doubt many people took advantage of it. I knew guys who switched planes three times their first year but those were displacements.

Look at the seat lock like a training contract (with certain exceptions). You can move to any base with that aircraft if you are seat locked without adding anything to the seat lock.

How does bidding work as a new-hire? In class do they list positions available and you bid based upon seniority? Or do you submit a standing bid from day 1? Or do they just assign the class whatever they need that month?

If your seniority can hold it--and there are surpluses in your desired base or you are displaced from your current base--you can bid into the same equipment at a different base.
