Default Firebreaks

Can someone please explain what these firebreaks are, how they work, and what impact they have on the people who get them?

Net York can go into a ground delay program if they think they see a drop of rain in the distance. They are building longer times between flight flights during busy times to try and mitigate delays. This means less productivity and equates to less days off

The one positive I can see coming out of firebreaks is more guarantee to overnights length. Ive had 16-20 hour overnights turn Into 10-11 because of New York delays. But I’ll take more days off at home over that.

So when the concept of firebreaks first came up, it sounded like no big deal. An extra 50-60 minutes on top of a normal 40-60 minutes turn when transiting through LGA or JFK at the most delay prone times. No big deal, just gives us some extra time to hit up the popular LGA hot food and salad bar. However, now that the pairings have been generated with this logic, most of the connection times that touch the firebreak windows have become 3-4 hours as you now have to wait for the next departure bank... Those extra 2-3 hours could be spent doing another flight. The end result is that NYC and DTW pilots (those two bases cross paths a lot) will end up having to work an extra 1 and a half days on average to reach the same credit time than they would without the firebreaks as average block per day dropped from 5:27 to 5 hours in NYC. That means one now has to work 15 days to reach 75 credit hours versus 13.76... in addition, many of the schedules became less commutable.

The rationale explained to us was that we are doing it because that was the directive from Delta. Pilots are very upset and company is meeting with union today to discuss it.

I live in DFW and was hired at Envoy and Endeavor. I chose Endeavor, because of the pay and commuter policy. Envoy's flow is nearly a decade, and I won't be at a regional that long, barring another 911. I'll either quit or move on to bigger and better at that point.

Reserve at Envoy is hell from people I've talked to, and when you finally get a line, it isn't much better.

I was an ENVOY guy before and I was on the protected seniority number group. My friends who turn 10 years this Saturday the 18th are still holding reserve on the CRJ out of ORD as CA at the bottom of the list. The flow keeps getting pushed back and they are looking at mid 2019 right now. Reserve at ENVOY has always been 2.0 hours short call even NYC. I did it for a year and I found out that being at the I PAD by LGA was the best choice to cover LGA and JFK. I was JFK based at the time. Here how I did it: Have uniform ready to go. Once the call comes, take the bus to 82nd or Jackson Heights, then take the A train, then take the Air train. I logged in in the system 30 minutes before my report time. Commuting out of JFK to ATL is almost impossible, so LGA offered the best deal. Work around the system and it will work for you. Q Gardens is not really the best place for a crash pad if you are covering both airports. The next step is to get out of NYC ASAP if you do not want to be based there.
These are my two cents from a guy that did 3 years reserve, I was 7 from being furlough, and with no hiring always at the button. 1 at JFK, 2 at ORD.

I am hoping it changes and it may just be growing pains but apparently we are only going to get bigger. I believe we may be growing too fast. Strange to say that right.

There is still no flow and the DGI is ambiguous at best. Delta pass riding is terrible and we are still not sure about priority. Without some incentives, including life style issues, it may not be worth the time here. Envoy is now hiring DECs AND THEY HAVE A PROPER FLOW! If I was an XJT guy/gal, I would not stay here waiting, wondering and sitting on airport Reserve for no reason.

Discuss.

Our non-rev benefits aren’t bad. But maybe I’m just biased since I’m typing this from Delta One halfway across the pond.

The opportunity for resume building is excellent as well. Reserve times are going up but that's because none are properly staffed finally
. Our biggest issue right now is not growing OCC with our pilot groups. 2 hour holds during IROPS are simply unacceptable. The reserve grid needs work, and also the lack of garunteed career progression is a concern, but we have something at least for now. We've made huge gains as a company for the positive the past few years, and I only for see it getting better. That's my two cents, but everyone has different perspectives so to each their own.
Kool-Aid is strong in this one. He makes some valid points about gains...but never been treated poorly? FNG?
I’m willing to bet that you have a better chance at Delta if you go to PSA/Envoy or any non Delta feed. Don’t bite (hire) the hand that feeds you.

Plus you have a flow as a back up plan should you get stuck.
