Man, I wish I could get my wife to join me on an overnight. But standby travel... not her thing.
There are a few of our overnights where transportation is by a car that will fit only 3 crew. On those, I'd uber.
I would never try this with JUST a child too young to spend the night on their own at an airport/hotel. Flights get overbooked, airplanes get broken, and flight crews time out. Now if my wife was traveling with the kid(s) on said occasion, that's another story.

There was an HI6 a while ago about calling the hotel to confirm that you will have an additional person. like others have said, some hotels only plan on having the small car or van but will be glad to change if they know before hand.

I bring my wife on overnights all the time, I never have any issues with any of the process other than making sure the loads are good. As long as they look half way decent, you should have no issues. Hotel rooms and vans are not a problem. I have even gotten extended checkouts for my wife if she is taking a later flight home. Have a good time with your family!
I appreciate everyone’s useful feedback! This is one aspect of the job that never crossed my mind. Great to utilize once in a while, on a long overnight, on a lost day. This seems to be great especially for those who living in base! One leg, frequent flights per day to good overnight locations.
