I'm not defending PBS. I personally don't care if we have it going forward or not. All I'm saying is that I think it's ridiculous to be upset about what happens to pilots junior to you. With our PBS there are numerous ways to bid. If the way you bid combined with conflicts and the pairings the company builds cannot award you a line then it's pretty simple: you're not getting a line. Every pilot's situation is different and PBS goes one pilot at a time. Putting a junior pilot on reserve instead of awarding a line still will not get you a line. Your schedule was completed before the system moved on. I know misery loves company but quit worrying about everyone else. The argument should be "there are pairings available and I wasn't able to hold them and going forward there should be a way for me to hold a line in this scenario" versus "the guy behind me got a line and I didn't!!!"
A huge problem with PBS at our company so far is that most pilots have only seen the results of it within 5% of their bidding status. You have no idea what it is like in my bidding status. Your posts are nearly as bad as the flight attendants who are all convinced if it doesn't work out your way you didn't bid correctly. I know exactly how to bid in my status.

Quit trying to defend your awful PBS. It isn't flying over here...
Jesus, If we had line bidding the last 10 percent of pilots would be on reserve. PBS takes all the trips that would normaly be dropped into opentime because of vacation or training. This gives several guys that would normaly be on reserve a schedule. If your schedule as a " line holder " would allow u to swap or pick up a trip in PBS opentime , u would already have it with PBS. The goal of any PBS system is to build as many schedules as possible and ideally have zero opentime, there by creating the least amount of reserve schedules as possible... It's not rocket science. So the guys who would be in the situation of having a " junior" pilot get a schedule because of vacation or training would have their ass on reserve any way. Find something else to complain about. ASA PBS WILL NOT AWARD A SCHEDULE TO SOMEONE JUNIOR TO U IF IT CAN COMPLETE A LEGAL SCHEDULE THAT GETS U TO THE MINIMUM CREDIT THRESHOLD!

And you have no idea what my bidding status is.

I'm not arguing the merits of PBS. All I'm saying is nobody below you had any impact on your award. If PBS can award them a line that's their gain, not your loss.

Having open time is a good thing when you need to trade for a trip that might be better commute-wize..

I agree. Open time is great for pilots, gives us choices.

With PBS if u bid properly u will get the trip on your schedule. Open time is great for pilot quality of life but requires the company to hire extra pilots to cover it. What r u willing to give up to cover the cost of a few extra reserve pilots?

It doesn't require any additional pilots AT ALL. To create a little open time, you have more reserves and less line holders. Or you can have a system like we have now which uses relief lines and all the line holders have an opportunity to swap.

Myth. CRJ pilot numbers and pilots required to staff under PBS is the SAME, and in some cases MORE than what the ERJ side uses under lne bid.

There have been months where the CRJ reserve pilot percentage has exceeded the ERJ's.

I quoted you because your post was the most indepth. Several others have had the same leanings in their posts. So I ask you all. If I bid for upgrade and because of something built into the system it was awarded to a junior pilot and not myself, both of us being eligible, is that okay? I cannot understand how an industry built on seniority can allow any of this to happen. So hell ya I am concerned about what a junior pilot to me is awarded. But more so, I am concerned about what I am awarded. I want every junior pilot to have all the career progression they can possibly have. But our system dictates that I should get it first, as far as pilots on our seniority list. So therefore the PBS at our company should damn well honor seniority down to the lowest possible bidder.

And you have the numbers to back this up? Besides pointing to the -700/900 that the company is keeping overstaffed for some reason?

How do the numbers work out when you start to look at relief line holders? Or are they considered full line holders in your estimations?
