Yep, like I said, it’s really clear on the chart that some of those WBs are replacement aircraft, NOT all additional airplanes.

Not sure how far you are referring. But yes, at one point the 777 was supposed to be a MD replacement. The plan was dedicated 777Fs to replace the International/Long Haul MDs. MD-10-10/-30 and Domestic MD-11s would be replaced by 777-200/-200ERs Passenger to Freighters Conversions. They ran into issues getting the P2F to be financially/engineering workable. They said it was unfeasible and stuck with buying dedicated Freighters.
Obviously with the P2Fs starting now they figured it out, but that the story as it was told 10-13 years ago when the 777 first came to us.

Yes, that’s what I was referring too. Thank you for the reply.

767 is domestic Md replacement and the 777 is its INTL replacement. If you study 767 bidpacks and city pairs many two legs into a hub are into a city that just swapped an MD for a 767 so the 2nd 767 carries the leftover from the 1st. Ive also been swept on an outbound leg to cover what the 1st 767 couldnt carry on the outbound. This is the new normal.

Is it written into the contract how crew on the MD would be treated during the phasing out process? Would they simply bid a new position or are they promised a spot on the potential new aircraft? Prioritized to keep their current domicile?

Are you familiar how Union contracts work? The only thing that counts is seniority.

In the past (DC10, 727) it’s proven to be something of a boondoggle to be on a dying fleet. Lots of people end up being paid to sit home as they await training on a new airplane. Beyond that, it’s just a matter of bidding what your seniority can hold and getting in line with everyone else.

I was going through MD 11 training with the last of the DC 10 pilots, some had been sitting for 2 years. Those skool haus instructors earned every penny they were paid! My FO also a 10 holdout was really sharp and he knew most of the captains from the 10. Some had been plumbing since age 60 and were now coming back to the age of glass, it was dark times for many!

According to today’s Global Air Operations town hall, all the MD-10’s will be parked in Victorville in Jan 2023, after peak. Additionally, Scott said the MD-11 and A300 fleets will be drawn down over the next few years. He also reinforced the plan for an all Boeing 757, 767, 777 fleet. Someone asked if there is a fleet replacement plan for aging 757’s with their increasing maintenance issues. He said that the plan is to use them for many many more years and that their reliability numbers simply don’t show age related maintenance being a problem. It didn’t sound like there’s any plan supporting rumors that we are getting A350’s or A321’s.
