Rumor is 60+ in the pool, and you had better get your head wrapped around the idea of HK if you want a class date in the near future. I have a bud that got that email. It eventually led to correspondence with HR and an impending test date. Hold on brother. That's a very good sign. Wish I got one...

My guess is that there are a solid 30 to 40 Max treading water right now.

Well, I am a FedEx guy ... and although I'm a bit discouraged about the latest HKG FDA rumors (we haven't received facts from the company or the union yet), I'd say this is a GREAT JOB and you FedEx wannabees should jump at ANY opportunity to get hired here.
In fact, Hong Kong is a very interesting city, my wife would go and the FDA LOA now includes a provision for company paid schooling (at least partial payment for school?).
I think you'd be quite foolish to rule it out. It might be fun for a few years in order to get your foot in the door here (And second year widebody f/o pay is more than a UAL narrowbody Capt. makes!!!!!

It depends is the only asnswer that can be said with a straight face. If I had to guess, 95% of any pilot hired into HKG with the intention of leaving could be back out of there by the 3 year point. But there are no real hard and fast rules, and if Fedex wanted to they could slow leak you for a long time. The truth is ALPA is a toothless tiger, not their fault 68% of us pulled their teeth.
It will be much easier and more profitable for a single pilot to go than a married one. But for either, plan on spending every off minute of your probation year in country. That goes for the missus if you take her.

Would you seriously feel dirty? There are probably a few pilots at FedEx that don't want to go to ANC either. That doesn't mean it's a slap in their face if the company hires you for that base. As long as you intimately know the issues faced by HKG pilots, I'd say go for it.
