Always hiring direct entry captains. the question is can the make it through training. Pass rate isn't exactly what I would call stellar. Being generous, maybe 1 in 6 IF that. More likely 1 in 8 or 9. The flying is the easy part. It's the company stuff that gets people. The FMS is foreign and currently the way it is taught isn't exactly easy to pick up. The 2M 'Sim" they have is more for procedures not exactly FMS related things. It's just a different operation. Most of the post airline guys crash and burn. It is what it is.

As I've said before, it's not a lack of quality. People are HIGHLY qualified. 78 Captains, 88 captains, 74 captains, retired airforce col., Retired jet blue folks, former NJ folks, good quality of candidates. 320,21 guys. Folks that fly the 12 for other charter outfits. No shortage of good candidates. They just can't pass training. The method of evaluation in their $2M procedures trainer is a terrible waste IMO. The flying is easy. It's the company stuff that gets folks.

The company is a great place to work and the training is comparable to what was done at my previous major airline and the commuter before that. I’m a DEC going through the new program and I can see how it would be difficult to learn a new FMS, aircraft, and company operations all as a Captain. With this new program I’m getting comfortable with the FMS and the aircraft without also being responsible for the operational aspect of the operation. The other DECs going through this new program feel the same way.
