No, I've had it happen on the 757/767. The absolute worst is when you actually talk to the FO coming out of the plane in the jetway, and you have to look up his nose because he's a thyroid problem 6'8'' or better. Then down in the cockpit, Gigantor has the seat and pedals all jacked up. "SON OF BEETCH!"

THANK YOU! I got into a plane once and went ape **** when I found the seat all the way FORWARD and up on the ceiling. HOW DID HE GET OUT OF THERE?

You do realize that seats can be moved after you get out of them?

It's expected to move your seat full forward on the Airbus copilot side so you can get your overnight bag into position.

It was the same on the 737 when we used to carry flight kits- it was much nicer to be able to walk in and toss your flight kit into position with the seat full forward.

The 757/767 had enough room where it didn't really matter where the seat was left.

...and if you get upset on where the rudder pedals are left, you obviously either are wound too tight or lead a very stress free life otherwise!

I leave it that way because cheap tools leave the germ ridden airplane DC headseats on the chart holder.

I'm aware of this practice on several aircraft types - my comment has always been whether doing this represents a best practice safety-wise. Granted, it's unlikely (but then again, so are many of the other scenarios we prep for) - but what if someone needs to get in the seat and set the brakes NOW because the aircraft is rolling (say someone pulled the chocks for some reason)? It's happened, and having to move the seat to gain access to the brakes seems to be a poor practice to me.

Feel free to nominate me for TOTD if I'm being to OCD over this, but I've always left the seats aft and outboard for exactly this reason.

Yeah, you're being OCD. Unless the chocks get pulled while you are standing inside the airplane and you actually notice it is rolling, how are you going to get inside the plane from outside once the door moves away from the jetway? Not to mention the fact that it would take a lot of time to sprint down the jetway from the terminal or up the stairs from the ramp.

Now, if it's an RJ, sure, you can just hop up the airstairs, but why would you? Better to let that sucker commit suicide and reduce the population. The A380 can't take care of them all by itself.

Perhaps I should have been clearer - I was presuming someone on the aircraft would be noticing it, not someone outside. I'd blame it on too many years of ACMI flying with ground crews from all over the world, but the truth is I've seen glaring incompetence right here in the states - so it's not just that.

Yes it's a slim chance, I've been on board when the ground crew has stated "Chocks In" when they really weren't, and yes we started rolling (on an L-1011, and the captain was already out of the seat). So to me the best practice is leaving the controls fully accessible, even if it adds about ten seconds to the amount of time it takes the next guy to place his bag.

But enough seriousness - Back to the TOTDs!

The only thing France ever attacked in it's entire history was Comair.

Default Seat positions aside…

My TOTD nominee is a certain captain who believes being chosen to do a delivery flight means he will be picked up by SouthWest. Doesn’t he know that it is maintenance flights that SouthWest cares about?
