I'm not trying to remove anyone from blame, but are you sure it wasn't station personnel?
Maybe it's changed, but the same thing happened to me years ago, and I was surprised to find that it was the station guys (I think it was in SYR)-- who had permission to power up the aircraft -- who left the battery switch on and delayed us that morning. The station manager showed me the checklist they had and everything. Too, bad they missed the last step.

It turned out the local rampers had figured out they could light up the cabin with the emergency lights. They got a talking to....

Yeah....we asked that question. Nobody touched the plane all night. It was an Int'l flight that had been secured after arrival. When the ground crew got to it the next morning, the battery was dead.

Truth. I was in ERI with an Air Wis crew when I was at 9E. We were pulling away from the airport and I looked back at our plane and noticed the emergency lights on. I thought that somehow I had screwed up the power down checklist and immediately asked for a return which of course resulted in the ultimate scorn from the other crew.

Sounds more like a mistake than toolish behavior. A tool typically involves some selfish motive or narcissism.

Sarcasm meter is fully functional.
