As a new hire at HAL hope for the 787 and expect the 717. There are rumors that class drops have specifically been changed to give someone the 717 who didn’t want it. A test to their commitment to the company. Not sure if that’s what actually happened or if post merger management would continue that tradition. You won’t make any friends complaining about the 717 if you get awarded it though.

a while back there were a few 787 new hire FOs, but generally 787 vacancies are filled by current pilots

what happened was somebody that wanted 330 freight got awarded 717 on first day of indoc. Because he was junior. He quit and walked out of class. After that the company runs separate first day of indocs for freight and then combines the class with the other fleet new hires so that doesn’t happen anymore.

The only flexibility the company might have is to offer class dates which they know will align with specific vacancies. They might well do that if you ask nicely and have a good reason, ie ask for a later class because you want a specific domicile which is specific to a certain fleet.
I can't imagine they (AS) would intentionally assign someone to a fleet they didn't want as a "test"... they have enough retention problems in the face of big three hiring as it is.

Class drops at AS will be in accordance with the CBA, so whatever slots are open, in seniority order.

Anyone who wants the 787 is more likely to get the 717. There have been others who have quit because of their aircraft assignment. The company makes an effort to tell the pilots what their aircraft assignment is before showing up to class, and people have deferred class dates because of that info. The actual bidding for AC doesn’t happen until day 1 so if a senior person changes their mind it can change everything. It is reasonable to have separate fright/pax classes but there is no guarantee if you’re assigned a pax class. Company can change their mind at any point before day 1.

this is such a ridiculous statement. Hawaiian has operated relatively the same as Alaska and the rest of the industry when it comes to new hires. Only difference is that Prior to the freight operation we had only one base (I know there were times where there was other bases) so it took that part out of the equation.

Pre-2015 yes. After that I’d disagree. Nobody is out to make anyone’s life hard. But attitude is noticed by management and peers. New hires griping on probation is typically a red flag anywhere. If there are logistical issues, a new hire can plead their case. Pre-2015 was a different story.
