Aren’t there a bunch of guys waiting for class dates? What I’m wondering is, why no Q400 upgrades for the May vacanacy?

Re: Pilot count is down to 830-ish. Historically, Horizon has maintained about 10-12 pilots per airplane. We've currently got around 67-70 airplanes, so 830 sounds about right. Some of these pilots are in training, in management, or on military or medical leave. I've been here about 20 years, and the staffing level is about as good (on the "fat" side) as I've ever seen. I actually managed to trade a four-day trip for a three-day trip next month. This would have previously been impossible :-).
Re: Q400 upgrades. The number of Q400 trips is way down, so fewer pilots are needed. As an example, Portland went from about 270 Q400 trip pairings a month last winter to around 200 a month this spring. (Numbers are approximate, just to give you an idea of the reduction in flying.) We're pretty fat on E175 pilots, O.K. on Q400 FO's, and adequate on the Q400 captain side. Some of the more experienced Q400 FO's are holding off on the upgrade until they can hold a base they want, and/or avoid reserve.
