But, yea, you need to be able to get away from the cult.
You know that you can leave?

I ate at the lodge for the first time last week. Pleasantly surprised actually. For $8 the salad bar cant be beat(if you leave hungry you did it wrong), and they had some fish stuffed fish thing that didn't suck.

But, yea, you need to be able to get away from the cult.
Very true. I ate there twice during recurrent (stayed at a hotel). One lunch and one dinner. Both meals were good and relatively cheap.

Many of our pilots don't mind staying there for recurrent (2-4 nights depending on your base). I just can't imagine being locked up there for 6+ weeks. Enough to drive one mad.

Oh I can leave, I have a car and a boat... but for newbs who may not live within driving distance you could be "stuck" with no convenient method to just breath... JMO. But they built the lodge with little escape.

3-4 days... no problem.
4-6 weeks... no way.

JMO.

oh ya, and that fruity tea... it was thuper! really... you gotta try it, just once.

I'm almost done with new hire training (LOE tomorrow, why am I on APC forums and not studying?), and I will say that it gets a bit old after a few weeks, but on days like today, when I brief at 0530, I'm pretty happy to wake up a few steps away from the sim building, and finish up just a few steps from my bed for a post-sim nap. I've never felt a bit of "big brother is watching," in fact I've had a few VPs pick up the bar tab, and ate lunch with the CFO a few weeks ago. Overall, I don't mind the lodge, I get away when time off permits. My stomach is ready to take a break from the Lodge food, though.

I get what you're saying. If there's a will, there's a way. We managed. Usually someone has a car, taxi's, hop on the shuttle to the hotel area. You can make it out. Did it often.

What is the typical schedule for new hire training? Weekends off during systems and then what ever the sim schedule is firming sims? I asked when I got the offer letter but he didn't k ow for sure.

I stand by my comments saying that the pay can be better, and would rather stay at a hotel. BUT, that's not how things are. Hopefully they improve for future newhires, but just because things can be improved does not mean that it makes things miserable.
Did I strike a nerve? I certainly didn't mean to.

I'll ask you about it again in a few years and see what your take is.

But, you'll probably be on with United, Delta or American by then, right?

No, you didn't. You just don't speak for everyone.. That's all. I think your missing the point that I agree things can be better. I'm just not saying that it's the miserable experience as you see it. I have no clue where I'll be in a few years, but current plan is not to leave here anytime soon.

We worked a few weekends, had most off, usually 2 days off between phases (systems, procedures, maneuvers, and LOFT) the occaissional day off mid stage.

Some people are just unhappy with everything in life. You give them a box full of gold, they will say that it's too heavy. The lodge is great, pay could be better. If you want to leave, rent a car or uber. They could pay poorly and put you up in a crappy hotel.
