Realistically with so many flights in and out from other bases, the low hanging fruit gained by having even a small base is having reserves, eliminating some hotel and limo costs, and just more flexibility being able to build originating/terminating pairings with no limos from JFK. Obviously not every EWR flight (in fact very few as a percentage) have limos to/from JFK, so I think the immediate need and benefit isn’t all that large, but will grow as they establish staffing and block hour needs. Just adds a little operational and planning flexibility and reduces some cost to their pairing build imo, even if initially small. I wouldn’t read much into a small initial base as the build up is still in its early stages.

While not the primary reason for a standalone EWR base, politics likely plays some role in the decision as well. Jetblue needs as much access to EWR as possible and Scott Kirby is trying to lock them out. A tangential benefit of opening an EWR base is that it shows commitment to the market, can be touted as the creation of jobs, and should to level the playing field against United in the eyes of the Port Authority when allocating resources at EWR.
