That's the problem. We don't have rigorous physical exams and we don't even have easy mental exams.

Those at the top care not how many would get taken out by that rigor if they can only hang on two more years.

I am not for extending but those extra 2 years would be the highest earning years of their careers. For some it could be another million bucks.

The mental exam is the sim.

Yes, I have known of two pilots who struggled with sim after years of experience on the type, who were subsequently diagnosed with some sort of dementia condition. If they struggled on the line, it didn't rise to anyone's attention.

The risk of sudden incap rises with age, there are lots of factors but you cannot remove age from the equation. I think there does need to be an age limit, but don't know what it should be.

That age has probably increased since the 1950's as people on average live healthier lives.

I would be OK with slightly more stringent requirements for BMI, blood pressure, etc after age 50 or 60... those are cheap and easy to measure and also easy to correlate to specific statistics for stroke, etc. That would mitigate the age associated risk.

I don’t think the industry could tolerate the reduction in staffing and the associated LTD that would result.

Doesn’t matter if the pilots get to stick around if the airlines can’t add capacity bc there aren’t enough controllers.
