Cricket,
I'm certainly not opposed to the idea. And on a clear day, I'd always tell the folks about points of interest, especially during tourist season to/from Alaska.
What I have a problem with is a guy who, on his own as a junior F/O, introduces himself to the 1st class cabin as Capt. XXXX even if he was one in the Navy. It always amazed me that someone could reach that rank and be oblivious to the fact that a ship or aircraft only has ONE Capt. and it wasn't him.
The other thing that bugs me is guys like one pilot I heard on a flight from PDX to SEA did (no joke!) 30 minutes on the Mt. St. Helens eruption. He talked continuously from "ding ding" going up to "ding ding" going down.
That was way too much.

Excuse me gentleman, but I speak newbie...
Cricket, have you ever seen the generic airline Flight Attendant PA guide? Goes like this.

[Wait 3 minutes]
PA 5: [Repeat PA 1]
[Wait 3 minutes]
PA 6: [Repeat PA 1]
[Wait 3 minutes]
PA 7: [Repeat PA 1]
[Wait 3 minutes]
PA 8: [Repeat PA 1]
[Wait 3 minutes]
PA 9: Begin informing passengers of the benefits of the mileage program and signing up for a credit card and that a flight attendant will be coming through the aisle to hand out applications.
[Wait 3 minutes]
PA 10: [Repeat PA 1]
[Wait 3 minutes]
PA 11: Announce that a flight attendant will be coming through the aisle to pick up credit card applications.
[Wait 3 minutes]
PA 12: Please turn off cell phones. Door is closed. Sit down.
PA 13: [After door shut] Begin pre Safety Briefing PA
PA 14: Begin Safety Briefing PA
PA 15: [After FO says sit down] Make a PA repeating what the FO says.
PA 16: [After landing gear retracts] Begin welcome aboard/now that we're on our way PA. Single out frequent fliers and tell them how wonderful they are and tell others that haven't joined that if they do join they will now get a PA after takeoff telling them how wonderful they are.
PA 17: [After passing 10,000'] Begin explanation of drinks and snacks that will be available on flight. And repeat benefits of credit card.
PA 18: [Prior to begin service] Make a PA explaining you are beginning service.
PA 18B: Tell people to sit if they stand up and the seat belt sign is still on.
PA 19: Make a PA saying that service has ended and you're going to pick up trash.
PA 20: Repeat PA 19.
[Wait 10 minutes]
PA 21: Repeat PA 19.
[Wait 10 minutes]
PA 22: After pilot makes en route PA about fasten seat belt sign is turned off make a PA reiterating what the pilot said.
PA 23: After pilot makes PA that descent has begun, make a PA to reiterate what pilot said.
PA 24: Make in range PA, tell people that their internet service is about to be cut off because you are on final approach.
PA 25: [After 10,000' bell by pilot] Make a PA telling everyone you're about to land so seat backs up, tray tables up, threaten retribution for non compliance.
PA 26: Make last call trash pick up PA.
PA 27: [After landing] Make after landing PA.
PA 28: [After parking[ Make after parking PA.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
So if you're the first class passenger that got on first because you are a part of the 20% that provides 80% of revenue, you had to endure all of that.
Now imagine the pilot wants to join in the fun with a in cabin meet and greet, an in cabin facing the passenger PA, a long before takeoff PA, 2 en route PAs, a scenic tour of the country PA but please ignore that in doing so you shut off their in flight entertainment/movie/moving map that told them where they were. Then a in range PA.
Frequent Flier who was hoping to get a little sleep:
I have flown a couple of trips with him. He made several "sight-seeing" type of PAs during the flight, as well as the stand-up-in-front pre-flight PA. After landing, probably 10% of the pax made positive comments on them, not a single negative comment. Plus, one pax turned in a "kudos" for the flight.
So, say what you will, and I am still a probie (for 2 months!), but the pax love the PAs. I think the folks who have been in this industry for (probably) too long have forgotten what it's like to take your first airplane flight, or how doing simple PAs like I mentioned really add to the experience for most passengers. Flying an airplane is really cool, and so is flying in it for a lot of folks. I understand the jaded business traveller might not feel the same, but they are probably in first class with headphones on and a free drink in their hand by the time announcements are made.
Personally, I think the percentage who don't like them is WAY smaller than those that do, just my newbie observations.

I've been doing the speech for most every flight for the last few months. I've got to say that I've been surprised at the positive reactions I've been getting from the passengers, lots of eye contact and smiles. I know when I fly in the back I appreciate quiet but I'm not the typical passenger. I guess most people are just happy to see a person up there.
