Earlier this fall UA and MAG settled a lawsuit regarding adding more 70 seaters. The settlement leaves MAG with no additional 70 seat work. UA dumped Mesa's 50 seat lift so why would they come back inquring about that?

Good flying, with good folks. The grass isn't always greener elsewhere, any place you work is partly what you make it. I can understand why going back might not be the first choice for some, but for me, I've had worse jobs (albeit not many for less money..LOL
) and since I do like most of the folks I've worked with both in the "front office" and FAs, going back isn't among the worst decisions I could make. Even on reserve, the crew trackers weren't bad, they were just doing their job (a power-tripper or two occasionally, but not the rule).
Regional Airline Management doesn't seem to be too much different anywhere, I suspect that should the regionals pilots get ALPA onboard with a view to end "whipsawing" (and I get sparkly ponies for Christmas) things might improve a bit. Seriously, I suspect that things like the 1500 hour rule (no exceptions for "big" flight schools, please) will eventually lead to improvements in pay and other things as the airlines have to keep us around and treat us as Professionals, because there is no longer a pool of half-a**ed 250 hour wonders who can't pick up a clearance properly but are sure that instructing is well beneath their lot in life.
Bottom line for me anyhow, is that I miss the job, I miss the flying and the folks I worked with and I'll go back and probably become an ALPA volunteer to try and make it a better place to work for everyone there now and everyone who follows down the road.

Thank you. Well said and I had the same experience at Mesa.

Here's the "official" word on recalls, forwarded by a friend:
Friends/Crewmembers:
Here is a little heads up on the furlough recall plan as we get it cranked up. Please share it with our furloughed colleagues when and if you speak with them. They can certainly also contact me at their convenience and I will do my best to answer questions although there are a lot of moving parts. Once we get the program under way I think it should flow smoothly. The big message being this is great news and it's rewarding to be working on it.
We met with Captain Tad H. and First Officer Collin W. from our ALPA office earlier in the week to share the official notification of the recall and outline the basic initial plan. The first phase will be to recall pilots into the D8 so as to be able to get the individuals who are presently flying the D8 but can hold the CRJ back into their CRJ FO seats. These individuals have worked hard to keep the D8 program on track and honoring their desire to get back to their jet seat is a priority.
The initial recalls will be for D8 classes in January. Presently 2 crews for January. The driver for the number of recalls is the availability of D8 simulator time strange as that sounds. The D8 is suddenly very a very popular aircraft with the military in Afghanistan and Pakistan. February and March should have 3 crews entering training. Additional recalls into the CRJ should follow the D8 recalls and will be completely dependent on attrition as it develops in 2011. FYI attrition almost 30 for this past October and 18 for November.
Early next week an informational letter will be going out to our furloughed group followed by a phone call from Alvin or Myself to answer questions. Next Friday the first furlough recall letters should go out per the provisions of "furlough recall" outlined in section 17 of the CBA. Again remembering 2 crews for January.
Furlough recall is pretty good stuff to be talking about. Can't wait to welcome our team members back to the School House.
Regards and thanks,
Mike
There ya go.

Seems to be managements plan, but then again, when does anything they do ever go to plan?
My suspicion is that attrition will exceed the company's planned values (usually around 5 pilots a month, or something ridiculously low like that) and recalls will pick up come spring. Purely speculation, but based on years of dealing with Mesa management.

So 10 guys/gals recalled back into the d8? Wouldn't you be better off going to Eagle? At least there is some growth there. How many are still on furlough? How many will they have to go through to get 10?

I don't think there is going to be news like that until mesa is out of BK though, anyway. Once they're out, then you'll have some news to sink your teeth into - I bet. And what about those infamous 10 backlogged 700's? If 50 seaters are the problem and UA wants 10 more planes, then there's your answer, right?

It's a distinct possibility that they will lose that battle, isn't it?

But regarding mesa and UA...there's some bad blood. That could be a problem if OJ and cohorts stay in charge.
Also the engine that drove the old mesa was not low costs...in my opinion their operational stupidities ate up a lot of their cost savings. What they really had going for them was that lucrative sweetheart deal with the AW 900's. That is now reduced to what one assumes are market rates, and mesa is very small for a jet regional. Their economies of scale for overhead (training, admin, MX, management, etc) are not good, most of their peers in that size range are wholly owned. I suspect this means that mesa will not be able to automatically undercut all other bidders going forward (unless they bid flying at a loss).
It's a shame that they couldn't have pulled off a regime change...that was what I really wanted to see out of this mess.
