I think he meant the pilots are interested in having them on mainline property. I highly doubt mainline management is interested, for the very reason you mentioned: cost.
Interestingly enough, if mainline did fly them, they could put a few more seats on them and increase the weight to around 89k I think it is and offset the cost of more expensive pilots and flight attendants with increased revenue. I would be very interested to see what United thinks it could operate them for compared to what they pay Mesa to fly them.

A lot of the news I read over here is themed around reducing our dependence on Express carriers. I imagine there is some serious number crunching and discussions up in Chicago regarding the value United as a brand gets from cheap labor and reliability issues vs doing it on their own and possibly improving the overall travel experience.

Regardless of who flies the 175s in the future, the easiest way to improve the overall travel experience would be to get rid of these back-breaking slimline seats. Deadheads over an hour on those seats are worse on my back/neck/tailbone than many "legitimate" OJIs.

Which aircraft? Training takes about 2 1/2 - 3 months if there are no significant breaks. EJET did have a 4 week break for sim, but slowly getting caught up.

Not sure of what training delays there are on the CRJ, if any. I would plan on 2 1/2 to 3 months from start of ground school to being done with IOE.
