It seems we are getting less and less previous 121/135 and CFI types.

I recently overheard a VERY senior check airman venting in the PHX crew room about the new hires coming through the training pipeline. He alluded to the fact that it is mostly older guys who have logged the majority of their experience milling around in 152 on CAVUK days with niece weather.

You can say that again! But I've flown with this guy and even watched him doing IOE from the JS while I was commuting home, and he's a fairly upbeat person. I just feel like there is probably some truth to it coming from him.

Say what you will about old folks, but they have been around longer than ye younger types.

Yes, and their brains work slower, they get overwhelmed easier, they have a hard time with glass cockpits, and you must be on top of them in busy terminal areas so they don't blast into other approach corridors. I'm sure they can fly the pants off a c172, but if flying a jet is a new experience for them, they are a disaster. The young snot nosed kid is a quick learner and won't be a problem down the road. The old guy might require 200 hours of IOE.

And one more thing about the older guys... Their wisdom from life experience tells them to get the heck out of Mesa as soon as possible. I have yet to see any old guy stay the full year. It is completely stupid for Mesa to even entertain hiring them, nearly all of them have a corporate job waiting, just using Mesa for the type, getting current, and some jet experience.
