Separation timing from Active Duty
#31
Here is a scenario: Lets say I put in PC paperwork, get denied, then I am ironically offered a staff job with either >12 months or <12 months remaining on my ADSC (GI Bill transfer). What are my options at that point? Can I turn down the staff (7 day opt) and then wait it out at my current assignment (like sanctuary), eventually Palace fronting to Guard or Reserve? I used the 12 month as a notional vul window, since I don't know what AFPC deems the cutoff. Although, I do think if separation gets approved from a 7 day opt you have 7 months from that date to actually seperate.

I'd hate to be the guy trying to match assignments right now for the summer moves given all the force management programs going on. Seems like AFPC is going to have people going all sorts of directions and I'm not very confident they have enough people to handle it. Already seems to be going badly and VSP doesn't open until next week.

I'm a Navy soon-to-be-retiring with about a year to go. I've got around 1800 hours with around 1000 PIC in P-3's and T-6's. Getting my ATP in a month or so. Standard question: how competitive am I for the majors? And is a year out sufficient time to be ready? I've been told my crew-based background in the P-3 will help, along with the multi-engine and having flown internationally. Honestly, what's my best bet here? Any advice would be great.

Diceman, over the next decade the majors are going to hire a gazillion pilots. Right now 1800 is not a huge number compared to the 10,000hr regional guys out there. In five years it may be very competitive. But the Navy background is helpful and 1800 is enough. Even more helpful is a pilot at a major willing to walk your name over to HR and say "We need this guy." That will get you an interview at many airlines. (I'm at DAL.)
Spend the money to get a good prep course if you get an interview. The guys in the industry often know how to answer questions that a military guy typically does not (customer service/FAR/117/CRM.)

Like ^^ct^^ said, you need networking. Recs, Face time with recruiters at job fairs, friends bugging their chief pilot in your favor.

If you are still flying now I would say to fly your arse off and add as many IP/PIC hours as you can. Depending on your financial/family situation, with your totals and an ATP you should have no problem at all getting picked up by a good Regional where you will easily add 600-700 hrs of Total Time in a year to your resume/Apps, plus gain some good 121 experience as well. Have your Apps in with every Major and update your hours every month. It’s a big financial hit to go from Military Officer pay to $20-25K with a Regional, but if you can get by on that with your pension and maybe some savings then logging all that Regional time will put you right in the mix as far as being competitive with military experience. Not having to cram in 8-10 days of Guard/Res days on your 10-12 days off a month may help make the family life a little more bearable if you do have a wife/kiddos at home. Yes, life will suck for a year or so, but if your dream/goal has been to fly for a Major since you were a kid then it will be worth it

Rusty, Grumble, and CheapTrick, thanks for the replies. I'm definitely going to be applying for everything, regional and major, including the cargo ones as well. I don't have much in the way of inside contacts, but I'll be working on that also. I'm sponging any other advice/gouge given, so please let me know if you think of anything else.
