Can anyone comment on how long it takes to get DEC out of training? I’m coming up on my commercial and multi and I live literally 30 minutes away. Would love to be able to mooch off my parents a bit longer and live with them while I pay off loans
Also, where is the training done and what would the day of an FO in the Midwest look like?

Yep. In fact the 30k contract was brought in cause something like 8 or 10 FOs bailed without upgrading in a span of a week or so two or three years ago.

I think that average is severely skewed. None of my friends made nearly that much as a multi year captain on the 135 side.

Some of the incentive pay is like $500 to pick up a trip. Recently flew with a captain that said he would make $1200 a day flying a trip like that. It’s possible to make 6 figures as a first year captain. You just have to work a lot.

I have one concern about Cape Air - the promisorry note.
I am fully aware the pay at Cape isn’t that great; no regional pays well. However I am concerned with the organization requiring you to sign a promisorry note holding you liable for the $35,000 training costs. The terms of the contract state that that you are liable to repay that should you quit or have your employment terminated with cause prior to completing one year as a captain with Cape Air. Those are pretty high stakes considering the organization has, I think, a 50% wash out rates for new first officers. Fail checkrides or in some other manner disappoint the firm you’re now liable for a lot of money. I also worry about the company delaying your upgrade to captain for asinine reasons so they can keep you tethered there. Do we have any Cape employees who can comment on this?

In the case of “terminated with cause” as the note reads, you would NOT be expected to pay as WE are the ones who terminated the employment. Causes for termination include but are not limited to training failures, multiple or extreme disciplinary actions, or loss of medical. So in the case of wash outs that you mentioned, which is much lower than 50%, you are not expected to repay.
We would ask you to repay this investment if WE did not have a reason to terminate the employment and you chose to leave prior to the one year commitment. As its worded in the note, we are “without cause” to terminate employment. Obviously there are extreme circumstances for each side but we really aren’t looking for ways to make anyone pay.
As to your concern about upgrading; As an operation that can technically fly single pilot, the only reason Cape Air hires first officers is to get low time pilots the knowledge and experience required to fly as a captain. Therefore, once you reach the ATP minimums, you will be upgraded to captain without delay.
