A lot of the new guys are new to airline flying and don't know about tipping. I tried to spread the word in my class but don't know how much good it did. Even on the line I'm, as the F/O, often the only member of the crew who tips the driver. Maybe half the Captains also tip but I've never seen an F/A tip.

Yeah, oh boy $40 a day. You're making bank there. That brings your total year 1 compensation up to what, $25,000?

How can you talk about tipping with out talking about the service. Have you ever waited over an hour for a pickup when the ride was 10 min or less? Ever been tossed around or had to listen to music that was louder than a rock concert. I am all for tipping but I also evaluate the service, it isn't pay. In my opinion, the problem is those who tip, tip regardless, and those who don't tip don't regardless.

Tipping someone for doing their job is madness and the whole thing just needs to go away. Why don't you stand at the entrance door holding a tip jar as the passengers are deplaning. The only reason, THE ONLY REASON that tipping is still practiced today is because by law restaurants in most states can get away with paying waiters $2/hour legally because they are going to make tips.
People need to do their jobs and do them extremely well with pride and not expect a tip, its silly. Where do we draw the line. Should I give a surgeon a tip? An airline pilot?
Best I can see is a gift at Christmas time for someone.
Tipping someone every now and then for going above and beyond their job duties is acceptable and should be a welcome surprise to the person who receives the tip, we shouldn't be making the standard that its expected, then there is no incentive to do a good job.

Another thing I won't tip for is rude treatment of my crew. Many years ago, a driver complained about our complaints he was over an hour late picking us up. He started in on one of the F/As and I let him have it. I told him he would not yell at any of my crew. He could yell at me all he wanted but it would be in front of his manager or supervisor at the hotel. When we arrived at the hotel, both got an earful.

I don't ever tip when the van is late picking us up at the airport or the hotel. By late, I don't mean being told the van is "10 minutes away," then it shows up in 11 minutes. Late means we've waited much longer than conditions (weather, traffic, our arrival time, etc.) allow. Use some judgment here.

What would be the best domicile to be assigned at as far as family life? Are there any domiciles that have lines that remain over night at your domicile? My hometown is a direct flight on PSA to CLT and I would plan on commuting. But if some of the lines offer more time at home I would consider moving in base to have a few more nights at home. Any thoughts?
