American Eagle, pilots discuss hiring incentives

04:12 PM CDT on Friday, August 31, 2007
Bloomberg News

American Eagle, the commuter carrier for American Airlines, and its pilots union are in talks about incentives to attract more job candidates in a “highly competitive” market.

American Eagle is hiring as many as 700 pilots this year to fill vacancies due to attrition and recalls to American Airlines. Commuter carriers are facing a shortage of applicants as major airlines recall furloughed pilots or add new hires. American Eagle and American are units of Fort Worth-based AMR Corp.

“We’re definitely looking at financial incentives,” Dave Ryter, vice chairman of the Air Line Pilots Association at American Eagle, said in an interview today. “It’s highly competitive for candidates right now.”

The carrier, which has about 3,000 pilots, is interested in tailoring what it offers to applicants’ qualifications, Jim Winkley, American Eagle’s vice president of flight operations, said in an interview. Ryter and Winkley declined to discuss specific proposals because the talks are ongoing.

“There are different incentives to look at,” Winkley said. “We are not offering any incentives now.”

American Eagle has reduced to 800 from 1,000 the hours of total flying experience required for new applicants. The carrier offset that change by modifying its training program to make sure pilots meet the same standards, Winkley said.

The carrier and its union also are in discussions with the Allied Pilots Association, the union at American Airlines, about possible changes to an existing agreement governing the movement of pilots between the two airlines, Ryter said.

The so-called “flow-through, flow-back” agreement in recent years has delayed promotions for American Eagle pilots and could work against the carrier in recruiting, Ryter said. About 600 furloughed American Airlines pilots went to American Eagle after the 2001 terrorist attacks, with about 150 of those remaining at the commuter carrier, he said.

American Eagle is holding job fairs across the country to attract applicants. About 20 pilots a month are moving from the commuter carrier to American Airlines as the larger airline brings back furloughed workers.

“We’d like to see more” applicants for pilot jobs, Winkley said. “We’re not seeing as many off-the-street candidates as we used to see.”

American Eagle already lets new pilots pick from among its eight operating bases. The union is offering job-placement help for employees who decide to move to another airline, to help open up more senior positions.

The American Eagle pilots’ union is “confident that within the next month or two we will have agreements in place” to provide incentives and resolve issues with the Allied Pilots Association accord, Ryter said.\

careerpilot: this is what needs to happen for me to go to Eagle.

I was an F/O at Trans States, interviewed with Eagle last November (got the job) but at the time they were not allowing new hires to pick the base. I lived 5 min from DFW, so because I did not want to go out to the rock I ended up at XJT (started at XJT 2 weeks before eagle changed the base policy). Been here a little over 6 months and I have almost 500 people below me, upgrade is steady at 2 years. I now live in AUS and drive to SAT and average about 15 days off a month. Life is good here. So back to my point....what it will take for me to come over to Eagle.

1) 1st year pay at $30/hr minimum. 2nd year at $35/hr-prop, 40/hr-jet
2) Health/Dental/Vision Benefits start from day 1.
3) Base of choice (already in affect), as well as A/C of choice if canidate has prior experience in type.
4) AA seniority number (this is set in stone, AMR can not take this away). I can decline to flow up when my number is called but AA must offer me the job.
5) Sign on bonuses for pilots with prior 121 experience.

If these are all met by the end of the year (before I reach 2nd year pay) I will come over to Eagle. This is what it will take for me (someone with 121 experience) to make the switch. Eagle will have to up the pay/benefits to attract qualified pilots.

As I posted before, the other thing Eagle needs to look at is their hiring mins....If you graduate from FIT in Fla, you can get hired with 400/100, but yet someone that has a 4-yr degree from Univ of Fla, Texas, USC, etc...with 625/400 that was hired at TSA or PSA, with 250/25, and has 121 experience gets told, go get more hours.....mmmmmmmmm?

Do we see a problem here, I think they should lower their mins, but then hire based on the "total picture" of the applicant!

Stay tuned. I think several of your suggestions maybe addressed. If you do come over, let me tell you driving to work kicks arse. I am DFW based and didn't relize how much time I had off until I stopped commuting. Thanks for the comments.

I understand your argument but i personally don't think it is in the best interest of the flying public for airlines to continually lower their standards to attract new applicants.

Hopefully we will see some changes in the near future. I agree, I'm driving to work now (AUS to SAT) and even though it takes me 1.5 hrs my QOL has gone through the roof.

AE is having a pilot job fair in Albuquerque Sept 15th. I plan on driving up there with a freind to check out what they have to say. This is what I found from someone elses link:

American Eagle will have Recruiters in Albuquerque, NM to conduct pilot interviews. Please join us on Saturday, September 15th. A presentation will begin at 10:00am.

In order to be prepared to meet with our Recruitment team, please read over the following list and make sure you have this information available.
- Printed version of the online application you have completed
- Pilot Certification
- Log Book(s)
- FAA First Class Medical

Please be prepared to spend several hours at this event.

I intend to ask a variety of questions about what has been discussed here on this board.

What is odd to me, is they want you to have a copy of your application. I do not intend to apply until I talk with their recruiters. Will this pose a problem?

No more starting over at 1st year pay... longevity is more important than seniority.

No more starting over and over. Doesn't matter if its a 401k, DBP, or DCP, longer longevity means a bigger payout at the end.

No more starting over. Vacation & Pass bennies are functions of longevity, not seniority.

The biggest objection I forsee is AA guys who want their squadron buddies to start in the MD-80, not the ERJ, or who think that all AA guys should be USAF UPT grads, on the Eagle side the biggest objection will be the top 5 percent who don't want to lose their coveted place at the very top of the seniority list.
What a well written and well thought out post. You are right. Merging American and Eagle would set an amazing precident for the entire industry. "If it says American on the side, it is flown by American pilots." No more starting over!!
And I think you are 100% on with the only people who would object to this merger.
Well said.

Don't quite see where you are going with this...? Why would you not want to bring your app?? Number one, you never know these days, and number two, there will be recruiters at the job fair...
