Mr. TrashPilot,
I have a question about all the emails from ALPA on emaestro, stating they have not approved it and its a contract violation. I keep reading them, but the communication coming from the union leaders does not give any direction on what we can do to help or what is already being done to resolve this violation.
For example. If we are assigned a trip that's not legal. We don't do it. We refuse it directly with the scheduler and/or chief pilot. Why are we not doing this with emaestro? Can you explain to me why we don't get together as a union and just not use the system? Seems that this would get SBS turned back on in a jiffy and management off their butts fixing emaestro.
thoughts...please....

That, unfortunately, is not my department. That is a question you would have to ask of your status representatives.

For those of you wondering about the $20 assesment:
Without getting into an argument over if we are going to merge with another regional or not, it would be wise to just pay the $20. It is a cheap insurance policy to put an attorney on retainer should his/her services be required in the event of a merger amongst regionals.
Thanks to the past MEC administration, we are behind the curve on this. Our former MEC Chairman was strongly advised by ALPA National to get a Merger Committee together to prepare for such an event. He did not do this and now the current MEC must play catch up. Mesaba already has a sizeable merger contigency fund put aside and Compass is represented by the NWA MEC. We are being assesed this money because ALPA prohibits using dues money for mergers amongst ALPA carriers. Separate funds must be set aside for this.
If this money is not used, then it will be refunded, as is required by ALPA. This money will only be used for the purpose of retaining counsel for Comair pilots. This is YOUR SENIORITY. I think $20 per month is a wise, cheap investment in your career and your future, and your seniority. I'm sure there are FOs and Captains at Mesaba that are junior to lots of Comair pilots that would love to retain their relative seniority, meaning they would trump you in a merger.
Someone asked about non payment. If you do not pay, then it is treated like non-payment of dues. You are put in dues arrears and then eventually placed in bad standing. If that continues for too long, you are kicked out of ALPA. Since this is a union shop, being kicked out of ALPA means being fired from Comair. Those are not Comair MEC rules -- they are ALPA by-laws.
If we were to integrate and our MEC did not start this Merger fund to get ahead of the curve, most of you would be crying foul for not doing anything. So, they are screwed either way. I believe they made the right choice by choosing this route and getting a plan in place.
I have already made out my check for $240 and it is stamped in the envelope and will be mailed out tomorrow.

No it is not a requirement. The ALPA kool-aid drinkers (and Comair has plenty) will tell you so, but there are a few on our seniority list that have opted out of the union. But guess what? They still have dues money taken out of their paycheck. At that point, you may as well be in the union and receive the benefits of it.

Okay, so if I understand this correctly here...
Being a member of ALPA is not a requirement. But you are charged the dues of a union member. And you receive the same things as a union member (contract, work rules, etc). So what exactly is the difference between a non-member and a non-voting member?

Do you think the Company has your best interests in mind? I can guarantee you upper management at Comair could give half a corn hole about you, your family or your career.

I read the area where it discusses a timelime for a new scheduling system. However sec 24 does state approval. Maetro is new an its not going to be perfect the first go around, its not a copy of another scheduling system its completely new so i would expect a few bumps. Thats why they were smart enough only phase it in versus just dumping it in are laps. phase 2 should be the signs that they are fixing the issues pilots are having. We ran the system for months before it was ever turned on for the pilots.
