There is nothing inherently wrong with picking up open time.... AS LONG AS THE COMPANY PAYS for it. If the company wants to run at 90% staffing, that is their choice. Just make sure the override/junior man pay is HIGH enough that they WILL NOT make it SOP.

The fact is there will always be a percentage of people who, no matter what the reward, will pick up open time. No, it is not the union's job to protect the idiots from themselves, but it is the GROUP'S job to insure the idiot minority does not screw the majority.

Pick up open time if you wish, but MAKE THE COMPANY PAY DEARLY for it, and for forcing a pilot to work on days off.

So if 4 is insane, what about 6, 8, 9.....what is the limit then. Without a limit, pilots will take advantage and make bad decisions. Again it is about safety, not about punishing pilots.
Indapit, just to make you feel better, i don't know of ANY pilot here, even the biggest time *****s, that go to 4 days off. 8 yes, but 4 is a real exaggeration. And actually our company has done some things to limit picking up open time/fatigue, such as not being able to pick up 5 cdo's in a row, and needing a full calendar day off per week, not just 24 hours. You can't legislate stupid, said stupid person will just find a different way to make money and show up fatigued. Our industry is regulated by stupidity enough, we really don't need more "protect me from stupid" regs. Also who is more fatigued at the end of a trip....a guy who flew his butt off for 100 hours in a 14 day period and has 16 days off or the guy that had crap pairings (moneywise) and CDO's mixed in, who has flown only 57 hours but had 7 days off? only the individuals that know their body can answer that....

Just read the negotiating updat and I got 2 things from it. One, I am happy that they are fixing the reserve rules, especially night and day flying in the same week which they abuse constantly at pinnacle. I also for the first time saw then hint that this thing is not getting done by the 14th, which we all knew anyways. Hopefully by the end of the year.

That's what I got out of it too. There's still a lot of work that needs to be done.

So why have a union at all. Why don't we let each and every pilot work as an individual contractor? Everyone bargains their own rates. If pilots are stupid.......I guess it is not your fault.

The union absolutely needs to protect its pilots from making stupid decisions at all costs. That is why ALPA was started in the first place. SAFETY
